The two inch depth is 1/6th of a foot. You have 1 cubic foot so it will cover an area of 6 square feet (since 6 sq ft x 1/6 foot = 1 cubic foot).

Since a cubic foot is 12" x 12" x 12" you can look at the cubic foot as having 12 one inch deep squares the size of one square foot - Or 12 square feet of coverage 1" deep. Since you want coverage at 2" deep, you can only cover half the area or 6 square feet.

one cubic foot is 12*12*12 or 1728 cu in. one square foot covered to a depth of 2 in is 12*12*2 cu in. So the area you can cover is 1728/288 = 6 inches.

To visually solve, imagine the cube in your mind and divide it into 2 in slices. Common sense (really your subconscious) knows intuitively that you can get (6) 2" slices from a foot so it arrives at the answer long before the mathematician does.

1ft^3 = 12^3 in^3 = 1728 in^3
volume = length*width*depth
1728 in^3/2 in = length*width = area
area = 864 in^2
area = 6 ft^2
