Has anyone expieranced the Mossberg 835 3.5" with the 20" barrel for turkey hunting. How does it pattern. I am concerned with the short barrel.

Seeing as how the weapon was designed by turkey hunters with turkey hunting in mind, I'd say it's most likely a pretty darned good turkey gun.

In response to the other fellow....length of barrel has nothing at all to do with spread. The choke controls spread....and the 835 Tactical Turkey series is standard with an XX-full choke. Pair that with the Mossberg overbore feature and you got one pretty devasting pattern.

If you were hunting geese, you'd need a longer barrel for the accuracy. The long barrel won't get in your way. But for turkey in the woods, this one sounds like just the ticket.

Barrel length is not an issue. Lots of hunters use short shotguns for hunting turkey in brushy areas. The choke at the end of the barrel, the shot density and shot weight will set your pattern.

You want a good tight choke for turkey. Heres a chart.

Constriction Percent
CYLINDER .000 40 at 40 yds- 70 at 25 yds
SKT 1 .005 45 at 40 yds- 75 at 25 yds
IMP CYL .010 50 at 40 yds
Skt 2 [light mod] .015 55 at 40 yds
MODIFIED . 020 60 at 40 yds
IMP MOD .025 65 at 40 yds
FULL .030 70 at 40 yds
EXTRA FULL .040 73 at 40 yds
TURKEY .045 PLUS 75 PLUS at 40 yds

I have a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag with a 26 inch barrel and I use an extra full turkey choke made by H.S STRUT. Its called an "Undertaker". And it works great with #6 Winchester Supreme Turkey loads.

Just remember to remove the turkey choke and reinstall your regular (usually a modified choke) choke after the season is over because a turkey choke is to tight for most shot.

This gun is designed for turkeys and should be good to go so long as you use the turkey choke.

I am not familiar with that particular model, but short barrels mean a wide pattern. That's a scatter gun.
