I would say when they are ready. Some never take one, some Ive seen with them up at 4 years old. It's usually a security thing, some just need it longer. Soem carry blankets or teddy bears, some suck paicfiers, some thumbs. As they get older, if they need another sucurity measure they will change it on their own. If you rush it, they may develop other bad habits that they may never be able to break-nail biting, for one.

In my experience the easiest age to ween them from a pacifier is around 1 yr to 18 months. At this state the long term memory of a child is still developing. And after a couple of days they are more likely to forget the existence of the pacifier than at a later age.

I would recomened right now, I have a 11 month old son, and we never had him use a pacifier it seamed unneccesary, they might be useful during the point when they are teething but we had him suck on a carrot when hes teething, he used a pacifier for awhile when he was like 1-2 months old, but usualy there is something else he needs besides a pacifier well unless your child is old enough to have devoloped a habit already but then Id still recomend breaking the habit now,

All 3 of ours had one, Millie is almost 1 and has hers still.
The older 2 (now 9 + 7) got weaned off at about 2, wen they can understand what your doing. But naturally by about 18mths they only want it to sleep and choose to leave it behind when going out etc.. So much happens in their lives as baby's and toddlers, taking away a security thing, dummy or comforter, too soon will just traumatise them. Def get rid of it by 2 1/2 - 3 though!!

I have always read 6 months since this is the age that they are so interested in other things like toys and sittin up and even pulling themslves up!! It gives them something else to think about!!
but me myself can not do it to them I let both of my older girls keep them lots longer --my 7 year old was 4 and my two year old still uses hers!! My 3 month old will not take it !!Ive tried to get her to but she just spits it out!! I guess ill be lucky with her!!
Good Luck and do not worry if they keep it longer because the orthodotic pacifiers won't hurt those little teeth!

3 months. They can sleep through the night, and the immediate risk of SIDs is gone. Theyre still young enough to not have an emotional attachment to it, and can easily learn new self soothing techniques.
It just gets harder from there.
I only give my son a pacifier when he needs pacified. Like, when he's hungry in the car and we cant pull over and he's screaming like hell. Really thats the only time. And I think I've resorted to it maaaaybe... 3-4 times?
Those things are like cancer. I cant stand them. But they do buy a few minutes sanity while driving. :)

About the age that teeth start to come in. They may cry now about it, but be strong and do what is best for them. After all, that is what a parents job is. To do what is best for the child even if it is not what the child wants at the time. If they can tell you that they want it, they are really too old to have it!

I would say by about the time they are 6-9 months old and they can find other ways to soothe themselves to sleep. There is nothing worse then seeing a 4 year old with a pacifier in their mouth.

there is no set age to wean a child from a pacifier.
if the child is off the bottle it should be off the pacifier as well
we told our kids that the dog ate it. she was really mad at the dog for a while but she got over it. we just re enforced that she was a big girl and she didn't want to be a baby any more
