They almost certainly are not. They are thought to be viral, though the resonsible virus has not been identified. Although they are not related to the herpes simplex cold sore virus, they both behave in a similar way.
Once a person develops an infection it stays in the body for life. Immunity never develops. Periodically, usually when the patient is run down by another illness or infection damping down their immune system, they get an attack.
In the case of these mouth ulcers, apthous ulcers, each ulcer lasts about 10 days. Unlike cold sores there is no antiviral treatment available, and management is confined to soothing preparations only.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about four yrs ago, when I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I understand lots of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date other men again. In the end, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/XCCVd everything improved.
Not only was I able to remove all remnants of the herpes virus from my body in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This method gave me back the chance to be happy and experience real love again. Now I hope that I can help others too by sharing this story.

Nope they can be caused by ur menstrual cycle, vitamin deficiencies, hidden underlying diseases etc e.g canker sores which are a form of mouth ulcers are related to the above and are very painful not neccesarily caused by stress either although it can sometimes worsen the problem.

I don't know, but it's probably a safe bet as mouth ulcers tend to flare up when ones immune system is exhausted, and there's plenty of evidence for stress messing up ones immune system.

I think there is some truth in that. I never had any until my husband died a year ago, and then had some for about three months.

They are caused by cuts in the mouth when you eat crisps/chips, and aggravate you for days. Keep rinsing your mouth with salt water.
