OK , on this one i stick my neck out on the chopping block...This question is really a soap box for me.. First I have worked in many jobs where tipping was available. I personally do not have an attitude to receive tips is expected. It is appreciated, and i don't feel for me a measure of my worthiness or lack of performance if not received. That alone causes problems i feel . Nor do i tip as a norm. chop, chop... I have noticed a different air about employees who are on commissions and /or tips . I am tired of the attitude that if one doesn't tip , we are the low life of society. Why would employers think anything else but to underpay someone when they know it could be subsidized through tips! I ask , Who can truly live on the minimum wage? That really means "barely there wage". To Depend on the Generosity of others, who themselves may be struggling , who may get one chance a year to go out themselves, or be one foot to near homeless, is appalling. I believe that the the cost of living should be reviewed with the housing and basic living expenses to a ratio of income paid to employees in given geographic areas. Since some are higher. So that an income can be made to allow for a one family income to sustain the family to meet at least the basic necessities per the norm. thus allowing families to survive, and the opportunity for a parent to be at home raising the children if they so chose, where so many are now by caregivers rather than parents raised. Or at least an income so a single parent can survive without government aid, and humiliation. Tips are a Thanks In Performing Services..
the word Service is almost a joke . We use to have Service Stations, now it's Gas Stations.. no Service, or courtesy's..
Where has it gone that we should be proud of the service, and acts of professionalism we give in our employment. Rather than feel like a beggar. Or, a gratuity be added on automatically in some cases? I think this was a great question to ask. I pay for delivery SERVICE, to the company.. Which if it was truly a company of service, they would deliver FREE, I pay for installation SERVICE, one would think if they want my business, they wouldn't charge for.. I could go Tip poor.. tipping everyone.. and, i feel tipping should be an option not a expectation or add on to bill.. By the way... I did make good tips, when i worked.. And broke sales and service records... i believed in my product and performance .
I do tip exceptional service. I don't encourage ill behavior, or faulty performance by tipping just to tip.

I think it's a personal choice. It should not be expected. I used to work as an exterminator. It was against company policy for us to accept tips, even though we all did. I never expected them, but didn't want to offend those who offered. And usually, when they were offered I had to do some extra or unplanned work.
For something like a delivery, cable installation, consider the difficulty. Is it simply hooking your TV to the existing cable, or delivering a normal TV and putting it on the entertainment center? Or is the cable guy up and down ladders, running wires to several rooms,crawling around in the attic or crawlspace? Do the delivery guys need to carry a 300 pound sofa up 4 flights of stairs and twist and contort all over to get it where it goes?
I draw the line at what I consider routine. If they go the extra mile to get it done, then they deserve something extra.

Most major companies do not allow the delivery peole to accept tips. When the are done with delivery and set up if needed, I myself will offer the men/women something to drink warm or cold depending on circumstances.
Food delivery.. yes tip them. fast delivery, bad weather more tip. I have never heard of a set amount like a percentage for food delivery. Give what you would expect if you were making the delivery.

I only tip cable guys if they do an excellent job, are polite, and are fast. I always tip my hairdresser because she always does amazing work. I only tip the UPS guy if he hauls a big package for me. Tipping a wait person is a toughie though. How much I tip depends on the service I receive. I always try to leave at least $3 for bad service but I have tipped a $20 a couple of times.

Tradespersons such as cable and telephone installers do not expect tips. Most of them are unionized and make good wages.
Frankly I'm sick of the whole 'tipping' thing.. it's demeaning and a relic left over from the old 'upstairs/downstairs' or master/servant relationship. It's time to get rid of the whole concept and pay a fair wage to employees who are accustomed to tips and roll that cost into the price of the service.

When the dog shampoo people come to the house I always tip them. My UPS guy is awesome, I alway tip him at Christmas and buy him lunch, that way I always get special service and my packages always come on time. If I am in a good mood or the delivery guys do something special or out of the ordinary, I slip them a 20 and tell them lunch or (case of beer) is on me.

I tip really well but I hate the whole tipping system in general. Just charge 2 dollars more for the delivery or item or whatever and then pay your workers well! I'm tired of compensating for the miserly ********* that refuse to tip!

I own a furniture store in Indiana. I pay my drivers a fair wage for the work they are doing ( keep in mind delivering furniture is not rocket science) My customers do tip the drivers sometimes but it is usually if the do something extra for ex-sample move your old sofa to your basement or move a large armiore upstairs The tip is $5.00 - $10.00 per person
Have a good day

To me it depends on whether they provided extraordinary service. Normally I would not tip them - I mean, they generally get paid decently for their jobs, and (more importantly) the tip is not figured in as part of their pay. On the other hand, for waiters, hairdressers, taxi drivers, and the guys who carry your suitcase at the airport or hotel, employers assume they will get tips and so they generally get paid less.

i tip the people who you know get underpaid such as ...
* hair dressers
* waiters / waitresses
* Baristas (starbucks)
* the nail technicians (nail salon)
* some bartenders
* The guy who fixes my computer (only cause i know his boss and he underpays his employees by alot)
* The food delivery people ... like the pizza guy if total is like 10.09 (it never is) gieve him like 12 or 15 dollars ... they make okay money but mostly they get alot on tips (ex bf was a delivery guy ... but he made $20 an hr plus milage ... he workd there for 4 yrs tho)
* baggers at grocery stores .. the nicer, faster , and cuter they are the more they get =) but at most places they are not allowed to accept them .. so wait until they are at your car and tell them if the manager didnt see it, it didnt happen ... cause truly that is the policy =)
______________________________________________
The delivery people and repair men you dont tip because they get paid enough already ... plus its their job to deliver your stuff and fix your crap ... unless they are exceptionally attractive and you wanna give them a tip they probably never expected. (o.0)
xoxo
