What are all the things I need to know about travelling? I've never been out of my country before except for regional areas but it's only for shopping. But I am travelling to Turkey to meet a friend of mine. And is it ok for an 18 yr old to be travelling alone in a foreign country? Thank you so much!

First, you should check to be sure you're familiar with Turkish laws regarding travelers. This website: http://www.travelturkey.com/byg.htm has some good info on things to know before you travel to Turkey.
Also, be street smart. Don't leave your bags unattended, keep all your personal possessions with you at all times, and use common sense. It's OK to have an iPod or something to keep you from getting bored, but make sure you can still listen for announcements regarding your flight and keep it well secured inside a pocket so as not to tempt any wrong-doers.
Bring a book with you for the long trip, and it's a good idea to have enough cash on you just in case. Have all your documentation ready (passport, visa, ID...) and available because you will be asked for it. Don't carry any sharp objects or anything suspicious with you at the airport. If you have any questions, ASK someone! Arrive at the airport early to give yourself plenty of time to check in.

I traveled by myself to Brazil when I was 15 to visit family over there, and yes it's ok for an 18 year old to travel by herself.

Good luck, and enjoy the trip!

I think its great that your getting to travel so young, BUT BEWARE!! especially since your going to Turkey, I have travelled extensively and one of the few places I truly felt uncomfortable was in Turkey, you would do well to read up on their customs as woman are treated differently there than here at home. They are also very aggressive. Be sure to take copies of your passport and ID and keep it in a safe place (not with your passport) that way if anything gets stolen you have something to show as ID and to show to police. Turkey is a fasinating place just use a little extra caution....its a crazy world we live in. Have a great time, and be sure to see the Blue Mosque and go to the main bazaar for some great deals (don't forget to bargain with them, if you don't try they'll charge you too much ; )

Research the country customs, laws, traditions even learn a few words.you are less likely to be taken advantage of if locals think you have been there before.Meeting a friend there will be a great help. You don't have to worry about age..the fact that you are on this forum researching is an indication that you will be ok.
Take care and be safe
