You might try seasoning your stone a few times before putting pizza on it.

Clean your stone, make sure it is completely dry and rub a canola oil dampened paper towel over the surface of the stone. Bake in slow oven about 200 for about 3 hours or so. This will begin to season your stone. Try using it a few times and see if the smell and taste do not go away.

I use my pizza stone often and it looks terrible it is so black but, I never remember it smelling or tasting funny. None of the other stoneware has ever had that problem either.

Never clean your stone with soap (it will retain the soapy taste).

Good Luck!

Prepare a baking soda paste by mixing 1/2 cup baking soda with 3 tablespoons water. Apply baking soda paste and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Scrape off excess paste. Rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.

Never wash your pizza stone with soap and water. If you do, the pizza stone will absorb the water and soap and you'll be able to taste it when you make your next pizza with it. Just scrape off stuck food after it cools and rinse.

These stones have to be seasoned just like cast iron. I do this by cooking bisquits on it the first few times that I use it. Don't cook anything on it that is extremely odorous like fish. Also, do not wash it with soap. I know a lot of people resist this but it just can't be done. Your food will taste like soap. Anything that might be on it is killed off in the cooking process. I've never been made sick by my stones and I use a lot of them, cast iron too. I don't wash any of them. Hot water and a little scrubby and it's good to go.
