If you want to get her attention, use hand signals and vibrations. For example, she's on the counter and you want her to get down. Make a hand signal in a downward motion, or point to the floor. Then put her on the floor. If you want to get her attention, you could wave you hand (if she can see you from the corner of her eye, she'll likely turn toward the movement), or tap on the floor.

And have patience. And give her lots of love. After a while, she'll pick up on your emotions, once she gets to know you. Many animals are empathic and use this as a communication tool.

And don't feel sad for her. If she was born deaf, she doens't know what it was like to hear and doesn't realize she's missing anything.

I'm sure if the animal shelter told you she is deaf, she is. A good way to test is with a loud noise, from a distance, so she don't feel the vibes. A deaf kitty is not a total loss, its just a kitty with special needs. Animals seem to make disabilities work in their favor. We have a totally blind cat at home. Been blind since a kitten. Maybe even birth. She is 14 years old, and you would never know shes blind. We adjusted our lives around this, and always put things in the same place. Also, we have a Multie cat household. She runs (not as much as when she was younger) with the other guys alot. Skids around the kitchen, feet just a skidding. In other words, shes doing just fine. My point here is this, your Kittie will adjust just fine. Will she or he need some special needs? You bet! I would think she will learn to communicate with you threw touch, feel, face and body language, and vibes (made by noise). She will have a silent world. But your love and understanding can, and will make it all fine. I envy you for taking in a special kittie. You must be a very wonderful person. Good luck, and God bless.

Use unique visual gestures to communicate what you want to the cat. For example, flicker the lights in the kitchen when you plan on feeding her. Stomp on the floor when she does something bad. Close your eyes if you want her to feel safe with you. Toss the package of goodies in the air when you want to give her a treat.

Make sure that you have your own form of sign language with her and you'll be just fine. Most of all, just be there for her and gain her trust. You did a good thing by adopting her.

I don't think you need to feel very sorry for her. Cats are very visual creatures. When I am home alone with my cats, I often don't talk with them. We just communicate wtih looks, etc. I'll put my hand out and my one or more of my cats will come over to me to get pet. I'll pick one up and hold it on my lap while I'm on the computer or watching TV and pet it without saying anything to it. The cat purrs away and is content with just being with me and being pet - it doesn't need me to always talk to it, so don't be worried that your cat can't hear you - it doesn't need to. Just be with it and love it and it will love you back.
