Think you're missing the point of push ups in the military. You're talking about basic training.
The idea is not to make people strong, (that's a side benefit), it's to instill discipline and a sense of unity, (belonging, part of a team).
Go through it, you'll love it!

The strength also comes from 'humping.' That's the military word for hiking with a huge pack on your back that weighs more than you do! Regular PT (physical training) adds to that strength. They are rated based on the time they run and the number of sit ups and push ups they do. No marine would ever want to be below a 'first class' in a PFT.

In the army we do core strengthening exercises, we stretch a lot before we exercise and do a lot of reps.
They do things that strengthen all the muscles, ones that are hard to get to with weights sometimes. This is accomplished by doing push-ups, chin-ups, rocky crunches, sit-ups and LOTS of running etc... if you do this enough you will get very cut. They dont want bulk in the army they want agility, strength and endurance. All of which can be accomplished without weights.
Also, the bigger mass you are the more food you have to eat to sustain that mass so being big has really no advantage.
Try throwing a ruck sack on, fill it with 80 lbs and then run 6 miles at about 7 min. a mile. Youll understand.

dude
leave the misconception that strength comes from muscles,
its the mind that gives you strength .
in military you are made to work above your physical limit continuously that your mind gets used to giving more than 100%. that is the only reason that military people are so strong.

It ain't just the push ups. They'll also run 10 miles with 80 lbs. on their backs and carrying a 12 lb. rifle.
