I would suggest a cockatiel. Quakers get really aggressive if you don't spend a whole lot of time with them, and once sexual maturation hits, they're practically a different bird anyway. Cockatiels are great, easy to train, and pretty forgiving for not spending every waking hour with them.

All of the cockatiels I've had needed a lot more attention than a full time student could provide.
Think about what your life will be like in 2-3 years, not just right now (they can live over 20 years). They need to socialize and if they don't get that they become screamers.
A lot of college students end up having to give up their tiels because between work and school it's impossible to have an outgoing and happy bird. Especially if your mother will be around but ignoring it. That will drive a tiel crazy (or it will drive your mother crazy).
Get a budgie (or two). They're low maintenance and pretty quiet.

If this is going to be your first bird...big birds are a bad choice. A budgie(small parakeet) is a good starter bird. They don't require too much attention but still tolerate beign handled and shown some tricks. If you've had a budgie and want to move up to a bigger bird, I would go to a cockatiel. They require more work and attention then a budgie but not nearly as much as a quaker or other big birds. If you want a quaker, you might as well get a conure, quakers tend to be a little attitudinal. (conures can be too, but they don't seem to as much). There are lots of things that you need to consider before getting any bird let alone a large one. Think of space, time, money, noise, etc. Do some research, find people that own them, or go to a pet store and talk to someone who knows a good but of information on all of them and talk to them. Let them know your exact situation and see if they can give you more information....hope this helps...

I have two cockatiels and they are A whole lot of work...They can live up to about twenty years.. so consider that and also a single bird would need more attention than my two.. because my two have each other for attention when I can't be with them..you should go to a pet store and get a book about birds or whatever kind your getting to see what all work you would have to do.. and then decide if you really want one

Bird are actually a lot of work. They need alot of training and attention and will likely out live you if you get a parrot. Do your research first

two lovebirds would have each other to play with and dont like being handled much anyway. and still gives you the look of a "parrot" that you seem to be looking for.
