No, you don't have to stab a potato before you bake it.

I've baked (oven and microwave) many potatoes and never had one explode.

Yes, sadly. The other night I was baking potatoes and forgot to stab one of them. The poor spud blasted all over my oven so I had to make them again. As well as the oven, you should do this if you're cooking potatoes in the microwave. They'll explode there also.

If you do it on the microwave.
I bake them in the oven like this:
wash them good and pad dry the potatoes, then rub them with olive ( at this point there is 2 options)
my favorite- place them on a baking sheet & top them with some kosher salt
or - salt & pepper them and wrapp'm in foil
*** bake @ 350* / 375* for about 20 / 25 minutes or until fork tender * baking time will var depending on how big are the potatoes.

Definitely if you are "nuking" it - otherwise the liquid inside will expand, and the skin will split and explode. Not so important in the oven, as long as you don't want the inside to be "floury." Not pricking the skin means that the water inside will "steam" cook the potato. OK for some things, but not for twice bakes....

yes or the pressure will build up inside the potato and it will explode in your oven.

I think it's more aobut getting the heat into the potato so it will cook all the way through...but it could be about letting steam/pressure out too.

Yes, you do; or the skin on the potato will burst, and make a humongous mess in your oven.

You can stab your potato or your roommate, either way you have to stab something before you bake it.
