I have heard that Canidae is an excellent food. I have successfully used Natural Choice in the past though now I have one dog that for some reason is very allergic to all the Nutro products. None of my other dogs ever had a problem.

As long as you are buying a quality food, I think it's what works best for you and your dog. There is a lot of debate out there on what's best.

I had several problems with some of the superpremium foods (I tried several) with my dogs despite transitioning them slowly and feeding smaller amounts (which you are supposed to do) so I switched back to Eukanuba which seems to work for them. But some people swear by them.

Well Canidae is a great food, if you want a "better" diet, I would suggest either Orijen or Innova EVO.

Both have no grains, but Innova EVO is a raw diet so I find it slightly better.

My dogs do GREAT with EVO and my cats also with Orijen.

It's a bit pricey, but my dogs don't have to eat as much do to the high meat content/no grains.

Here's what they eat:

Kobe - Female Pit Bull/Rotti cross - 50lbs - 1 1/2 cups daily
Prince - Purebred Boxer - 57lbs - 1 1/2 cups daily
Ryder - American Pit Bull Terrier - 60lbs - 1 3/4 cups daily
Ace - American Staffordshire Terrier - 62lbs - 1 3/4 cups daily
Outlaw - Doberman Pincser - 97lbs - 3 cups daily
Capone - Doberman Pincser - 110 pounds - 3 cups daily

So, if your dog weighs around there.. then that's all he will need...

I have heard that Canidae is an excellent dog food. There are many excellent foods out there, but what determines which one is best is what is best for your specific dog and their needs for optimum health.
Some swear by the raw diet: http://www.rawdogranch.com
Some swear by Chicken Soup for the dog, Innova, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, Royal Canin, Nature's Recipe and others.
My dogs did great on the raw diet but I don't have the freezer space needed for my three dogs or the stamina to keep up with a well balanced diet. So sometimes they get some raw meaty bones to snack on. They eat Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice, or the Duck, Rabbit or Fish Variations. These brands don't have the common allergens like wheat or corn and are a bit lower in protein which best meets the needs of my dogs.
PetSmart has a brand: Authority Harvest Baked, that is an excellent brand of dog food that is also median priced.
One person was feeding this to her Husky and the dog was very healthy and doing well on it, but she heard the Chicken Soup brand was better. Even though her dog's coat started to flake on the "better" brand she continued with it because it was more expensive and supposed to be superior.
I also give my dogs skin and coat supplements because I live in a swampy environment- Houston. They get Skin Formulation 3V-Caps which have Omega 3, Vit A, D and E that work together for the good of their coats. Also they get a supplement called "NutriVed".
For upset stomach, they get Pumpkin Pie filling and occasionally they get Dan Active Yogurt or Cottage cheese mixed into their food.
I avoid RAWHIDES which are responsible in huge numbers for illnesses in dogs.

I agree with some of the other answers that Science Diet and Pro Plan are probably not the best of the premium brands out there. They do contain whole grain corn, etc.

However, this is not to say that Natural Balance is the only good food out there either. There are plenty of very good holistic, natural brands out there that are considered premium.

Nutro Ultra, Natural Choice, Nature's Recipe, Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo, and Authority Harvest Baked are all excellent choices, and none of these are considered "super-premium." You can find these brands in any big box retail pet store (except for the Harvest Baked because it's through PetSmart's brand).

As for the people that promote Natural Balance, please remember that it is a superpremium food and only available in certain markets. Not everyone will have access to it.

For future reference, the ingredients listed for Natural Balance are pretty much identical to the ingredients listed for Nutro: Ultra. Nutro is more readily available in most markets, as well.

Royal Canin is considered to be top-of-the-line dog food. It is recognized worldwide, especially by breeders in Europe, Canada, and the Phillipines (you will be able to find articles about it if you google it..google.com). It's higher in protein level (30%), than any other dog food brand. It has excellent ingredients and no by-products at all. Among other reasons, it is also why Royal Canin is the most expensive dog food brand in the market. I've raised my 2 American Pit bull Terriers with Royal Canin since their 6th week of age, and they both love it. They gain an average of 13 lbs every month and a half.

THE best is called Orijen. It is a canadian food that as of now you can only buy online at www.only4pets.com

It contains no grain which is just filler for dogs. No nutrition at all (most dog foods contain alot of grain). It is all natural meat, veggies, and fruit in the % that they would eat in the wild.

The meat is also human quality. None of that left overs stuff that people won't eat stuff.

This stuff will make your dogs much healthier. You will see a decrease in fecal matter in less than a week. This is because they are actually able to absorb all the nutrients in this food unlike all the fillers that just get left on your lawn or carpet in a couple of hours.

Ugh. I can't believe these answers! Pro Plan? Science Diet? Beneful?

Personally, I use Natural Balance. My dog is so healthy and so shiny that people ask me all the time what I feed her. She doesn't smell, her teeth stay amazingly clean, and she poops only two small poops every 36 hours. It's on par with Canidae where it's all human grade ingredients and no fillers. My dog just loves it.

The "best" food really depends on the individual dog. Some dogs do better on one brand, some do better on another.

Here is a good article on choosing a food for your dog.

I have a pit puppy and he didnt like much of any kind of dog food I bought. So I got this dog food called "bil-jac" its a frozen dog food. You thaw it out and its like fresh meat for them. its not to expensive either. I also helps them gain weight and muscle.
