Yes they do harbor bacteria because they stay wet and are porus. You can throw them in the washing machine though. I have one of the puff ball ones and it just goes in with the towels.

Loufahs can carry germs. As a matter of fact, all of the sponges and pads used for cleaning dishes, etc. carry a lot of germs because they are porous and provide little nooks and cranny's where germs can hide.
Hot water and soap generally do not kill the germs, but will wash them away to some extent. Chlorine found in standard cleaners does not kill all the germs either. It does not kill germs like tuberculosis, many fungus, and viruses.
Many bacteria have been found in nuclear reactors in steam pipes where the radiation & hot steam did not kill them and in fact the bacteria started eating the stainless steel pipes!
There are, however, some things that will kill most bacteria, viruses, & fungus much better than chlorine and standard cleaners. One such product is called GSE. It is a natural product and you can actually use it to purify water like that found in Mexico. I put about 10 drops of this very concentrated liquid in a gallon of water and in about an hour, it is good to drink. The GSE stands for Grapefruit Seed Extract, not to be confused with Grape Seed Extract.
You can make a simple solution of water & GSE and soak the loufahs in it for a couple hours and it will kill most everything and you will notice the loufahs will not be harmed in anyway and will have a very pure, clean smell. I believe you can purchase this on line at: http://store.allhealthtrends.com/pgi-customlistproducts3?GRAPEFRUIT%20SEED%20EXTRACT,2,16,=,GSE
You can even gargle this for a sore throat to help kill the germs. I've used it to cure food poisoning in a few people where I had them drink a glass of juice or water with 5 - 10 drops in it. It usually takes about 20 minutes for the symptoms of sick stomach to go away.
good luck
