I should have phrased my question to read: Why do people spread the lie about crystal healing?

I once knew a girl named Crystal who had some pretty amazing powers, but rocks? Nah.

I'm not really keen on that belief either, but I won't knock the belief simply because there are people out there who believe it and they have every right to do so. I believe any stone can be "associated" with a specific purpose and be used as a reminder of health or whatnot. But when it comes down to it, I think the human mind has more power to heal the body than a crystal. The crystal doesn't have any power until you "give" it power by believing it has power.

Why did the Prime Minister spread lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Perhaps he truly believed it, like the people who use crystals for healing. There are more things in heaven and earth than we will ever know about, nor understand. How do Bumble Bees fly, it is technically impossible given their size that they should be able to, but they do. Why do copper bracelets help people with arthritis. Perhaps it might be the same with crystals, they obviously give off some kind of energy as does everything in existence. It might be this energy source that has some kind of influence on the body and we do not as yet fully understand how this works. Homoeopathy seems to work but we don't fully understand it. I know that for many years the medical profession laughed at acupuncture and said it was nonsense, how come now if it is such nonsense it is available on the national health. Try and figure out how acupuncture works on the meridians of nerves and energy. The Chinese have used it successfully for generations and many operations are carried out there only using acupuncture as an anaesthetic. I think the crystals need a lot more investigation, perhaps they do work.

Ringo711 - look, 'the power of crystals' is actually nonsense. Crystals DO have energy, but so do glass bottles, screwdrivers and cat dooky. Everything contains untapped chemical potential energy, but that does not denote a healing quality. Quartz is not special because it oscillates with good regularity (it doesn't - quartz watches are not very accurate in the long-term), but because it performs reasonably well and is quite abundant compared with other, more expensive timing mechanisms.

There is a really, really good reason why a practicing doctor - you know, the ones with 160+ IQ's and 6+ years of intense training - will never prescribe crystals to a patient. There's an equally good reason for why the majority of people you'll find selling crystals are bored housewives.

If a person truly believes they are going to be healed by something, then oftentimes it works. First of all, they could simply recover from whatever illness on their own and they attribute it to the chosen remedy. Secondly, it has been proven that your mental state can affect your physical health. This is what they mean when they tell you to fight when you have something like cancer. Patients who believe they will die often do. Patients that use some placebo like a crystal actually experience some kind of chemical or neurological signal in their bodies that helps to heal them. Prayer works much in the same way.

Well crystals aren't going to cure cancer, but some metals, like silver are known to help heal wounds, there are some compounds that make blood clot up ( in a good way to seal a wound) and make blood move to heal faster, it won't happen instantly but if you have a ton of bruies from a bad wreck and put sliver over it they will heal faster than if you didn't. cyrstals may be the same. they theory with them is that they take our engery and if it's good they retain it and if it's bad they retain it so be happy around crystals and when your not get around them and you'll have happy vibes or whatever...we do have energies around us, not karma or bad enery or good or none of that, but honest electrodes and what not around us. so hundred years from now we might find out that there are negative and positive feelings with these engergies and crystals might have some sort of conduct or whatever... i'm open minded but the next cold i have i won't go digging for courtz

Well Chuckler,

My sister is into all that stuff. She in fact on getting involved in it has deteriorated in to more and more difficulties in her life. She has crystals for this that and the other that have cost her an arm and a leg. I wont list the things that have gone wrong with her health. But she seems to have crystals for each problem. Ummm as far as I can see her involvement in the occult and crystal healing has worked but in the opposite direction. Frankly she worries me sick and I feel obliged to warn people against that sort of thing. Oh I am a christian as well so I would feel it's wrong. But now I have seen the proof of the pudding so to speak.

They DO have energy. Why else would they use quartz in watches? Ever tried striking two quarts wands together in the dark? You can see the energy for yourself. As for healing, im not too sure, even though i am a holistic therapist with a rather large personal collection of crystals i have never really used them for healing.

It's nonsense, yes. Crystals are just molecular configurations. You're as likely to get healing powers from a banana. In fact, more likely. Bananas are organic, and are good for cramps. Crystals are just rocks.

It is precisely as you said -- nonsense.

And it has nothing to do with Satan. Two separate myths.

Raziel, your question ("Why else would they use quartz in watches?") is a good example of the assumptions people make instead of *learning.* The answer is that they use quartz crystals in watches not because they "have energy" but because their piezoelectric properties cause them to vibrate at a precise frequency when an electric current is applied, making them good for time-keeping.

Nor is your striking-them-together argument evidence that quartz "has energy" (or anything mystical). When you strike them together in the dark, you will see flashes of light. But just as with the watch example, the crystals release energy only after energy is applied *to* them (in the form of compression/impact or electricity). That's hardly unique to quartz or any other crystal. In fact you can see the flashes of light by striking wintergreen LifeSavers together! Maybe Kraft Foods should research the healing powers of their candy!

And while you may realize that tiny flashes of light generated this way have no more significance for healing than light generated any other way, many mystics aren't so careful in their reasoning. Anything they don't understand is "powerful" -- just as it was to their great grandfathers' great grandfathers.

Even if the crystals gave off some other kind of energy on their own, that doesn't suggest a thing about their usefulness in healing. Plutonium gives off energy, but its effect is hardly a healing one! Hot coals give off energy, too. Does that mean we should use them to ward off cancer, or the sniffles?

The properties crystals have make them beautiful, useful, and remarkable. One need not invent new ones to appreciate them -- just study with decent references!

Jeez, it's reminiscent of the early days of electricity. *It* was considered magical and evil, too.

Why do people spread the lie, chuckler (about this and many other unsubstantiated beliefs)? I think it's a combination of things. Huge numbers of people are terribly gullible, and have no sense of critical thought. They're bored. They lack basic science knowledge, notably in America. People everywhere want to believe in easy answers, and are awed by mysterious, powerful things -- so much so that if they don't know of any, they invent them. Because of that desire to believe, or often-times laziness, they don't bother researching things carefully. People fail to learn from the past. And people use the most ridiculous sources for their information. It's a sad and dangerous state of affairs.

Note that mystics like ringo711 rarely give any specifics about the properties of their pet belief, or show any links or other evidence to support their "facts." Mysticism is almost always vague like that.

It's a shame that the wonders so many people obviously crave can *truly* be found in the study of science, and what it has revealed about the *real* energies and awesome events unfolding all around us... yet they clearly don't bother to refer to science in their search.
