Like many others, it's a stereotype... most people, if they think about it, realise that not everyone from a particular area or country or belonging to a particular religion or society is all the same and fits into a personality pidgeon-hole but image, first impressions, bias, the media and other influences make us automatically think that way until we actually get to know people on a personal level.
As a Brit, I was amazed when I first came on Y!A that many Americans think all Brits have bad teeth and sticking-out ears... it just isn't true! Our health service may not be the greatest but everyone is entitled to free or cheap dental care so it may well be the case that Mister Average Brit has better dental hygiene than Mister Average American, but from somewhere the stereotype has stuck. In the same way many Brits regard Americans as loud-mouthed, boastful rednecks living in trailer parks and spending all day chewing gum... again a gross stereotype that may fit a few but not everyone (at least I hope not!)

I live in Florida and there are some "red necks". I think of a "red neck" as someone who is lacking in sophistication and narrow minded. Not necessarily an inbred, idiot.
Living in a mobile home does not make you a red neck. There's lots of people here that live in mobile homes that are really nice. 99% of the "snow birds" live in mobile homes or even campers for part of the year. Most of them have the money to keep up two homes. Of course, there is your "trailer trash" which I consider most of them "red necks".
I don't consider someone from the country a red neck. That's just country folk, farmer, rancher, cowboy, hick etc..
I live in the country on 3 acres of land. Have five dogs. Oh no, does that make me a redneck???

Actually they use to think in California that people from Oklahoma and Arkansas were idiots. But on test scores children from those two states scored higher than the children from California. Due to the ruralness of the children many today learn in virtual classrooms by computers.
They are now accepting children who learn by computer into the better Universities because they scored higher on the tests. A lot of kids don't do well in regular schools. children abuse each other and if a child is fat or wears glasses or just don't fit in they use to flunk out of school. Now they have small home schooling classes that are actually one teacher with maybe 12 students all one sex that seem to get along.
There test scores went from flunking out of school to straight A's. Showing that in some cases it is the enviroment.
All I did in school was get into trouble. After flunking out I went back to night classes and got my GED. Then took accounting classes at VOTECH. Then got a good job and now I practically run the office. I am buying my own home and have a fairly new car to drive I bought myself.
I do better than most of the people my age and I was a high school drop out.

Because they don't know us and most of them don't understand us, therefore, what they can't understand they think of as idiot. Maybe we are just too intelligent for them. After all we know how to think and we can add 2 and 2, as most of them need a calculator

120's not that high - merely 'above average'. Besides, the term 'redneck' is a derogatory one that IMPLIES 'inbred idiot'.
If you aren't an idiot, don't call yourself a redneck.

Why are you asking your question in the religion category. This section has nothing to do with what you're asking.
Anyway it's probably because of preconceived notions that people get from movies and things like that.
