I was curious if anyone knows how long a basset hound is pregnant for. My Basset is now 30-45 days into her pregnancy. Anyone have any good links for basset hound pregnancy?

The average for ALL dogs is 63 days.

Holy krap, your dog is weeks away from giving birth and your just researching the subject NOW?

You should know that bassets are prone to uterine inertia (especially if they are overweight) and to needing c-sections. Hope you have money put aside for that, as well as for the extra food, and the checkups and shots for the puppies.

Bassets are also prone to lying on their pups by accident, smothering them. You MUST supervise them 24-7 for the first 2-3 weeks to prevent this.

You should be taking her temperature twice a day. When there is a substantial drop, you can expect puppies within 24 hours. Do not leave her alone during that time.

roughly 62/63 days.

But Melissa, this research should have been done *before* you bred the dog. Responsible breeders have been working with other breeders and with the breed professionally for 5+ years. Did you do any of the proper testing on the dog? Are you showing her? Do the puppies already have good homes? DId you know that you are responsible for ALL the puppies you create, forever?

Too many people get into breeding their dogs simply because the dog is AKC. Remember, this is NOT a reason to breed. Please, find fabulous homes for the pups (hold registration until they are fixed) and then get your female spayed. With 2-5 million animals dying each year in shelters, there is no reason for non-professionals to be breeding.

The AKC is pretty specific about responsible breeding steps and most breed clubs also have codes of ethics and guidelines. Please take the time to read these before you consider breeding another dog again. The world doesnt need more BYBs like Y!A member China, and I know you want to do the right thing.

Good luck to you.

Normal gestation for dogs is between 58 and 65 days. Puppies born before 58 days usually do no survive.

It would be a good idea to take the dog to the vet now to get an xray or sonogram so you can see how many puppies to expect on whelping day.

As you dog gets closer to her due date, it's also advisable to take her (rectal) temperature two times every day (once in the morning and once in the evening). Often a dog's temperature will drop to about 98-degrees 12-24 hours before the pups are due to arrive.
