One of my girls had an umbilical hernia around 14 weeks. Scared me to death when I first saw it, I had no clue what it was... just looked like a bump under her skin. The vet checked it out and said that they could fix it when she was spayed, but it healed itself before that time (she was spayed at 6 months) and there was no need for the additional surgery. I don't know how common it is for the hernia to correct itself, but I do know that it happens, as in my case. She is now happy & healthy at 4 years of age (wow, has it been that long?) so I wouldn't worry too badly, it's fairly routine!

Umbilical hernia are not unsual, and often do not result in any complications for the dogs. We've had some pups at our shelter develop the hernias, and they're taken care of during spay/neuter surgeries.
Because of where the hernia is, there will be a little extra healing time for the pup that gets the surgery. Just make sure to keep the site clean and treat it daily with Neosporin to stave off infection and the pups should be fine.

My sister in law bought a shih tzu, and the first time she took the puppy to the vet they said he had umbilical hernia. She has had him for a little over a year now, and when he went in to be neutered the vet also took care of the hernia, he was fine, and has been fine. And it was great that they could do it all at once, no need in putting the little guy or girl through more than one surgery.

That is very common in Shih Tzu's..some closes on their own but all vets will fixed the hernia when they spay or neutered. There is nothing to worry about, but you should never breed a female that had a hernia..For the safety of her and her pups.

My sister had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup with this. It was easily repaired when he was neutered. That is typically what they do. Small ones don't usually cause a problem in the interim and it is better than having two separate surgeries.

Yes, it happens.
I had a female springer pup that had a herniated belly button and trust me, she lived a full happy life WITHOUT having to have that surgery.(yes, she did get spayed).
Yes, sure, the vet will happily take care of that for you at EXTRA cost that is not necessary but the choice is yours to make...good luck.

He's twelve weeks go ahead and get him neutered and get it fixed. We have had them fixed as early as 6 weeks and altered at the same time.
Your pup will be fine. This is very common.

my 2 year old chi-wiener has one. but they told me not to worry about it.
so i guess it's not really such a big deal. but i'm not getting him fixed, i think....
so if they say it's not a bid deal. then i suppose it's not.
just make sure you mention it to them if you get the dog neutered, for sure.
