I am a member of a civic organization. Have written about 12 articles for our monthly newsletter (serves a 4 state region). I donated over 300 hours of professional time to research the topic.

Now being asked to attend regional and district conventions to talk about the topic.

Each trip costs me about $500, plus time lost (about 60 hours) to tailor all the research to that specific region, plus 3 days to attend the convention, I pay for my meals and for copies of the handouts I pass out at the convention.

At our upcoming district convention, the keynote speaker wants $25,000 paid before he will agree to attend. My information can significantly help each of our Clubs. But I am expected cover all of my expenses.

I am thinking of charging for my time & effort. But how much? Any suggestions?

$10,000
Sure beats the other dude and when they realize your presentation is better than his even though you charge less, you will be asked frequently

Say, "Hey, I'd really love to help you out--I am a member of a civic organization, after all--but I also have a family to feed. I will need to have my expenses covered--transportation, room, food, cost of handouts, plus a little for my time." People often don't appreciate what's free, anyway.

Really, that's quite reasonable.
