I have asked my 8th graders the same question and of the 21 students in my class I have received the following answers:

7 students said Moshe Ravinu
5 students said Rabbi Akiva
3 students said Abraham Avinu
2 students said Sara
1 student said Rashi
1 student said Esther
1 student said Mariam
1 student said Lyubavichi Rabbi (what was shocking to me was the fact that Reconstructionist Jew has chosen the Rav)

So far I do not know why they chose those answers, but I know one thing my Sunday will sure be busy grading these essays.

I just want to know if you agree with their choices.

By the way thank you for answering and have a good Shabbas.

Oh, I forgot to put in my choice: It will be hands down, Judah ben Samuel Halevi, who if I am not mistaking in 1140 issued a call to Jews to make alyah. He himself moved to Israel. Many people think that Hertzl was the founder of Zionsim. They are mistaking. Herzl was founder of secular Zionism. Haleve was the founder of religious Zionism, though he himself have learned a great deal of secualr studies. In fact, because of HaLevi and his writings about Isarel, one of the greatest sages of the Middle Ages, Yechiel ben Joseph of Paris and his entire Yeshiva moved to Acre. This, goes to show that the Jews have always dreamed about settling the land of Israel and making it the Jewish homeland, all over again.

Probly Esther... but how cool is it that you teach at a Jewish school--my brothers attend one and absolutely love it! Good Shabbas to you my friend!

Christianity is fairly an extension of Greco-Roman polytheism that saved claiming Jewish roots lengthy after all factors of Judaism were purged in the wake of the destruction of Jerusalem and the scattering of the few Jewish Christians. Christians needed a mantle of respectability that in person-friendly words historic religions were granted in the Empire. even if it really is a love-hate courting with the Christians concurrently using on the coattails of Judaism even as hating Jews. The saddest area is those ameteur Christian "authorities" on Judaism don't be conscious of their putz from a popsicle.

I think Miriam is my favorite biblical character.
My favorite famous Jew from recent times is Sara Schneirer (sp?), founder of the Bais Yackov movement. She practically invented woman's education single-handedly. I don't personally go to a Bais Yackov myself, but no one would have come up with the idea for my school if it weren't for Sara Schneirer and her school.

I am not Jewish but I am interested in the results so thanks for sharing. I'm a little surprized that none said Rambam.
