I left the U.S. about 5 years ago and I honestly don't know if I should file for taxes I owe or to see if I'm owed a refund check. Is there a website where I can just type in my SS number and find out my status? I've tried the internue revenue service website, but can't find a link where I can check my status. I'd appreciate any help.

Directly write the Tax Office and request for a reply if you have a refund.

The IRS doesn't hand out refunds unless you file. When you do so, you tell them how much they owe you. Obviously, it's subject to audits and other checks.

But the IRS doesn't just keep around a list of people, who didn't file, who get refunds.

You need to file if you earned about a certain amount.

Are you a US citizen (I presume so, if you have a SSN)? Are you "permanently" living outside the US? Do you have any earnings from US sources (like a bank account, investments)? Or is 100% of your income from a foreign country?

These questions will help determine if you need to file.

Drop by a tax prep office like H&R Block. Ask them.

You can't get a tax refund if you haven't paid taxes!

There is no website that maintains the status of citizens. no such status exists.

Were you making money and paying taxes to the US government out of your checks?

IF not, then you don't get a return.
