I am having KILLER backpains the past week.
I am 23 weeks pregnant, with a retroverted uterus (my uterus is tilted towards my spine instead of outwards).
What the pai feels like is a pinched nerve in my lower back, only on the left side. Sometimes my whole leg goes numb. It flares up more and more with each passing day. Usually happens when I bend or twist my torso, which is REALLY hard to avoid doing (I have a 5 year old son, a dog, etc). It feels like a pinching, twingey pain that shoots up my back and down my legs. Pain is almost in my left bum cheek, if that makes sense. I have an appointment with a chiropractor in 4 days, thank goodness. My dr prescribed me some painkillers and anti inflammatories until then, but I want something natural and easy to stop the pain... It's almost like I have to shuffle my feet because when I lift my left leg its excruciating pain... do you know exercises that would help me? I do pregnancy yoga most days but havent been able to because of the pain

I also have sciatica, and one thing that has helped is to do exercises that stretch the piriformis muscle, which is located in the buttock and extends from the sacroiliac area to the outer thigh.
It's kind of hard to describe things only in words, without pictures, but -- here are two exercises that have helped me. (Maybe you should talk to your dr first, since you're pregnant?)
1. Sit in a chair with your feet touching the floor. Cross your left leg over by putting the outside of your left ankle on top of your right knee. Bend forward as far as you can, without leaning to one side or the other. You should feel a deep stretch in the side of the left buttock.
2. If you can safely lie on your back -- lie face up, take your left foot and place it on the floor to the outside of your right knee. With your right hand, gently pull your left leg toward the floor on your right side. This stretches the piriformis in a slightly different way.
Good luck, it's a difficult thing to put up with, and hopefully it's only a temporary thing related to the pregnancy. :-)

Though sciatica is a common problem, it is really surprising that often it is hard to tell why a person suffers from this ailment. This is why it is often referred to as a back pain complex. Even experienced doctors find it difficult to pinpoint a cause. Number of medical conditions lead to sciatica such as stress and trauma at any point on spinal cord or lower back. This is understandable but when a person feels this pain and the underlying causes are as general as obesity or pregnancy, it presents a vague picture to the doctor. There can be many more underlying causes that require supervision and treatment at the right time.

I can only imagine what the pain killers are doing to your baby. If you would like to try something natural go to healthquest.peoplesway.com and look at PROTEC, PROHM and PRO GCM PLUS. Protec is an anti oxidant that helps relieve pain. ProHM is a progesterone cream, Low progesterone during pregnancy has been linked to Attention Deficit Disorder in children. Also before the patented Cortisone came on the market Progesterone was used as a pain killer. These products are all natural not synthetic so they are safe to use while pregnant. Protrim is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women as it reduces body fat. Oil of mink will reduce stretch marks both during and after pregnancy. My neice had 13 year old stretch marks disappear using this product. You can see videos at youtube if you search peoplesway.
