don't believe the history books. i can tell you that both grandfathers, both not knowing each other until 1970, told me the same story. during the great depression, the city provided apples for people to sell. they called it "the big apple scam."
it is true, as read above, that jazz musicians later brought it back in the 40's. once again, it was brought back by Mayor LaGuardia's "Let's clean up New York, New York" campaign .

some religious groups were complaining after they called it the big banana. so they changed it to the big raspberry and people in staten island thought that was a dis, so the mayor called for a vote and by a narrow margin of 303 votes the big apple beat the big ham on rye.

The nickname was given to NYC by jazz musicians who played in jazz clubs on 52nd Street in Manhattan during the 1940-50s. When they talked together, they referred to NYC as the big apple and the nickname stuck.

The Pope: what you think of NYC is absolutely wrong! it is awesome! about the jazz singers, thats right. also, there's a circus that performs in a big apple building at lincoln center every year.
