Honestly it would depend on the application and the RPM range you want to make that power in. There is also a huge difference in what is required to make 500hp vs 400hp. If my destination is a pickup truck, I want the extra torque and lower RPM power would start with a 400crank and a 5.7 rod length. If the target is a lightweight car you would want a higher spinning, over-square engine which can be accomplished using a 327 crank and 6 inch rods. After that you by a matched intake and cam that is rated for your target rpm range. The heads will be key and for the money the cast iron world power dart heads are fine for your intended hp. When you take your block to the machine shop to be tanked and bored, they will install your bearings, freeze plugs and rotating assembly. You should get a rotating assembly Crank/Rods/Pistons as a kit that is rated for the rpm and hp range you are shooting for. PAW, Summit and speedomotive can all hook you up with the rotating assembly, heads and the intake/cam kit. Always use a 1:6 Ratio Roller rocker instead of the 1:5 stamped rocker to increase your cam profile.

Edlebrock has several applications with a proven hp gain. You can save some bucks depending on your heads, by having .0030 shaved off of them and then machined out to accept 2.02 valves or find a set of 1985 IROC heads for a 305 block that has 2.05 valvesHP is fine but what launches you off the line is torque. A good set up that I have is a stroked 350 bored .0030 out with 400 crank and rods.I have a Crowler stage 2 cam and a torquer 2 intake with a 750 Holley double pumper. 11-1 pistons That brings it up to 383 ci. Check out gmpartsdirect.com for performance parts as they too offer pkgs that produce hp and gobs of torque as well as Edlebrock. A couple mo. ago ,a fellow in a new Dodge Hemi decide to come around my 1969 Chevy truck and in 2nd gear I kicked it after he passed me. The Dodge had a 30 day tag on it and it was brand new. I smoked him by shifting when the valves just started to float and hit 3rd. Even with OD he could not get it passed me as I was pulling away . I also have a HEI ign *(GM) with a 27 deg adv and what I consider the best and least expensive modification was a rev kit in the distributor I used the lightest springs and the heaviest wts to see how it would idle and it increases advance like ya wouldn't believe and helps on gas mi too. Like I said check out the different combos offered and save a few bucks on the heads by doing what I did. Est hp is 425 torque is unbelievable as I can pull a 5,000 lb load like its nothing. Oh yea, I took some old hotrodders advive and put a Hooker header exhaust with 3" pipes, put a crossove rpipe between the exhaust to equalize pressure and a set of Cherry Bomb mufflers as far back as I could get them

Pull the engine, rebuild with high performance parts, if you do the top end be sure the bottom end will hold up. Then the transmission, rear end, drive shaft. It's just not about the HP, it has to be a system to get the power to the wheels, and the weakest link will fail. To get the HP up to that level, you may want to think about forced induction or nitrous,

Compression is fairly extreme, you've gotten blown the proper gasket. .060" should be ideal for the block. in case you cracked the block or there's a casting disorder then sleeving to the right length is an option even if the block should be weakened with assistance from the sleeving procedure. I definitely have under no circumstances sleeved a small block. bare blocks are low-cost sufficient to replace somewhat than sleeve. in simple terms relies upon on how a lot machining has already been executed. in case you've align-bored and decked the block or machined the crankcase for a stroker (383) kit then the sleeve should be your answer. you are able to purchase extreme output (460HP) stroker crate engines waiting to run for below $6000.

Depends on what you're starting from.
I'd look at intake, fuel system upgrades, possible cam upgrade, exhaust upgrades. Turbo or Supercharger would help too.
Crate motor would do it to... 8-)
