It's obvious what stance should be taken in the first set. The second set isn't. When things get controversial it becomes "politics". Gay marriage and abortion for the most part are a morality issue. Iraq is a policy issue. Because of conflicting principles in the second set we have controversy. The first set is clean cut.

We agree that genocide, rape, and murder are immoral because we have been raised in a world that punishes people who do these things. However, we get conflicting messages from society on gay marriage, abortion, and the situation in Iraq. So we either make judgments for ourselves or listen to who we(as individuals) believe to be authority figures.
For the record, even though you didn't ask, Gay marriage should be legal, abortion I am personally against but feel a woman needs to make that decision on her own. Iraq is a mess for which I have no opinion or suggestion as of yet.

Well...
Of course, anyone can look at genocide, rape and murder and see the negative because these are immoral, cruel and wrong acts.
Then you get into 'personal convictions', which is just a fancy way of saying "Because I don't feel it's wrong, it isn't".
Gay marriage: The Bible says that any man sleeping with a man as he would a woman or a woman sleeping with a woman as she would a man is an abomination. But, most people bring up the stoning of disobedient children or women on their periods being unclean in a way to discredit this. But, in the same book of the Bible, God says that a son shouldn't marry his mother and that you shouldn't sleep with animals. We accept these yet we defend homosexuality. Double standards and you can't sway those that follow 'personal convictions' anymore than a Democrat can sway a Republican.
Abortion: Most of this is defended with the lie that a fetus isn't life until a certain point. The Bible says that before we were formed in our mother's womb, He knew us. That should end arguments but it doesn't. Mainly, we live in a very selfish, pleasure driven world. People want to have intercourse without consequences. STD's and pregnancy prove this is an impossibility, not to mention the physical and emotional attachment when two join together. Most religious folks will argue that abortion is okay in rape and incest instances. This isn't true. When a baby is aborted due to rape or incest, the wrong person is being punished for another's crime. Adoption is the best option here if the victim doesn't want to raise the baby. Abortion is never excusable based on one solid fact: NO BABY IS A MISTAKE AND EVERYONE IS CREATED FOR A PURPOSE FOR GOD SAID, "BEFORE YOU WERE FORMED IN YOUR MOTHER'S WOMB, I KNEW YOU." Therefore, how could a baby be a mistake? Once this is pointed out, most pro-choice religious people see the holes in their logic.
IRAQ: It's a war. Of course there's going to be those for and those against. A lot of people are uneducated on Iraq and the reasons we're there. Most link it to 9/11, which it remotely is, but there was mass genocide going on there under Sadaam's reign. It was not as bad as Hitler's genocide but it was the mass murders of innocents. Most believe Iraq is a battle for oil and blame President Bush. This isn't true. President Clinton had chance to end it in his term in office but he didn't. And so, it fell upon Pres. Bush to handle it. It's how the cards are dealt. I'm not for war by any means but I am more so against mass murders and suicide bombers. That is why I believe we belong in Iraq, helping the innocents of that country, giving them a fighting chance to overcome the tyranny they've lived with forever.
I don't think that I helped you much. LOL. I kinda used this as my soap box. Basically, one can lie to oneself and make anything okay. It's one thing humans are good at. Only by listening to God and reading His word and letting Him move in you will one see the truth and even then it's just a glimmer because we wouldn't be able to handle more.
Cheers!

Yes the first 3 are wrong no matter who you are or what you believe. The second 3 are major issues for many people. I have no opinion on gay marriage. I believe that in nearly every case abortion is wrong but that the mothers who lost children that way should still be loved. I agree with John Paul II that Bush was wrong to attack Iraq. The disagreements come from the fact that we all have different ideas on how the second three issues should be interpreted in light of the first three universal concepts.

Religion - pure and simple.
Rape and murder have been taboo in most societies through the ages. Genocide was practised by tribes but gradually died out alongside cannibalism. It makes perfect sense that this should happen merely to protect the survival of the bloodline.
Abortion is almost entirely a Christian issue and gay marriage is also mostly a christian problem.
War is a difficult problem all round. Most people would not accept wanton slaughter of innocents, occupation of another country etc. but then why do politicians go to war with one country that does it and not another?
It is a sad fact that both Bush and Blair have alluded many times that it was their christian duty etc.

I don't think Iraq should be included with gay marriage and abortion. Why? Because gay marriage and abortion are religion sensitive subjects.
Iraq is purely political whether we agree with the war or not it's all about politics and monetary gain. Monetary gain for the top 10 of 1% in America, not us peons. And I might add, there are many religious people who agree with the non-religious on the subject of Iraq.

What you are missing is that in the first catorgory, those still against the latter, fit the latter into the first. Like murder is wrong yes, but to prolifers abortion is murder to them. Gay marriage because religon, and only because of religon. Iraq, these days I think the vast majority are in consensus about Iraq...

The first three are moral issues with a clear right and wrong. There is no way you can make a sensible argument in favour of rape or genocide. The second three are far more subject to opinion, as there is no universal 'right' or 'wrong' in such issues - there are sensible arguments to be made for both sides. In adittionn, they have become politicised, and politics causes contention.

Most people would never rape or murder or commit genocide, so that's easy for the majority to agree on.
But gay marriage, abortion and war affect lots of people (or people they know), and so they have strong opinions about it.
