I got my Vista upgrade dvd in the mail last week. Now here's the scenario - My WinXP works good so far *knockwood" - and i've got a single partition on the computer and loads of my work saved there... I've been wanting to try out vista for a long time and i thnk my hardware will be ok with it (Core 2 Duo 1.83, 2GB RAM, 120 GB HDD) - but my qn is, will it overwrite all the data? Cos i remember when xp is installed onto C:\, it formats the drive completely - does it apply here too?

i woudld belive so but remember that vista is still a baby to the world and it will have compabilaty isues so just in case make a back up of all your stuff and keep it handy with an xp insatalation cd so just in case vista is not so good then you can go back. personaly i am going to wit it out untill all vista bugs are worked out.

No it will not overwrite all the data on your system. When you "upgrade" to Windows Vista, you keep your files, settings, and programs from your current version of Windows, and just change the OS.

But if you do a clean installation then it will delete all your files and programs on your computer. I would suggest that if you plan to do a Clean Installation that you back up all your files.

I would also suggest that before you upgrade check your hardware compatibility even if you think it will work. Go to the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor on the Microsoft website. And download the upgrade advisor.

Then everything should be fine.

Why get vista for. Microsoft made a lot of mistakes with it. It's rubbish.

If you upgrade, no. If you do a clean installation, yes.

I would send it back. You're better off with XP.
