As a Christian I think there is a little truth in your question. A Christian knows that by worshiping God and Christ we are going to enjoy the best of the best in heaven. We also know that we are taken care of on a different level on earth. No matter what we say or do out of ignorance or anger God will always forgive. But it also does have a lot to do with respecting the God who put me on this earth and breathed life into my soul. He didn't have to make me or anyone that I love, but He did. Another benefit of loving God is I am being taught everyday new ways to be a better person. Being the best me that I can be will rub off onto other people. It is not all selfish. There are many reasons why being a God fearing person is beneficial. Sit in a good church service on a Sunday and find out for yourself. (That is if you do not already attend a church.)

Everlasting life in the presence of a God, which according to every religion, is only for a small number of the worlds people, in an attempt to have a perfect life, thereafter.
How can the destruction of most people, make the few survivors, actually think that their devotion was worth while?
Many peoples logic will not allow them to believe in such a God. From where did this logic come?
For me it is that promise of everlasting life as given by the religions, which means I couldn't worship such a God.

I'm not in a position to understand other people's views but I can surely say that there once was a time when I did not know what worshipping God entailed.
It has taken me many years - after doing whatever came to mind - to know that I do not have to worship God so that He would allow me a place in heaven or everlasting life in His kingdom.
I now have a peace within, having come to know God as much more than a provider or someone who would one day ask me to explain my actions at particular moments in my life here on earth.
When we talk of faith, we mean that we do not rely on what we see to believe but, rather, we believe before we receive and thus, we learn to trust God implicitly. This results, in time, in our becoming closer to Him in spirit. He becomes the centre of our lives; not someone to whom we cry out when we feel pain of one kind or another. To me He is not a "swear word." This is that 'relationship' of which we speak so candidly.
This is why I worship Him - the relationship I enjoy with Him; the love He gives to me so simply and readily. David said in Psalm 34, "Taste and see that the Lord is good."
I have come to that place.

"We love Him because He first loved us", this is stated in the Bible. There are various scenarios that can bring a person to the point of realizing their need for God. I guess in a way it is a self serving thing. Because knowing Him brings such a contentment in life. He made us for the sole purpose of having a personal relationship w/us. He has made life better for me and theres so much He has to offer people. He offers a wide variety of possibilties in this world. He's made life great for me. (even in the hard times that come) I worship Him better now, than in the beginning of our relationship, because I know Him better. I know Him!! He's a good God. One day I get to go to Heaven where He is. I'll get to see Him face to face. Worship of God can be completely REAL...when we really know who He is and how much He loves us everyday!

Worship should be given out of love. There's nothing wrong with expecting a reward. Jesus was his Father's greatest follower and servant yet he looked forward to a reward:
Hebrews 12:2 ... For the joy that was set before him he endured a torture stake, despising shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Colossians 3:23,24 ... Whatever YOU are doing, work at it whole-souled as to Jehovah, and not to men, for YOU know that it is from Jehovah YOU will receive the due reward of the inheritance

What a great question!
I've always thought everlasting life must encompass so much more than just "everlasting life".
For instance...I hope to gain a fuller understanding of God. My interest in God is intense. I hope to gain a closeness to this God who has created the universe and everything in it. If God has unlimited intelligence in every area, AND loves little ol' us..................for one thing this is mind-blowing...but it also gives me hope that I'm part of something more interesting, exciting, intriguing than even life on earth.

From a Christian perspective, the answer is an emphatic "no." That is almost the opposite of the Christian faith. Christians believe that God is worthy of their complete devotion and they delight in living their lives for him. And while eternal life is part of the work of God in which Christians delight, they would be content to live for God in this life if all people were simply anihilated at the end.

The point of worshipping God is to have someone who WANTS to know you. HE wants to know US. He wants US to share our lives with Him, He already knows what happens in it, and He can see how you feel, but He wants you to share it with Him. Like watching a child play in the street and fall down and hurt their knee, you can see it hurts and what happened because they are crying about it. He just wants the child to come to Him and be soothed and cared for when things go wrong.
You might say people are self serving who come to the Lord, and in a way you are right. Do you want to be comforted? Do you want the assurance of someone understanding everything that happens to you? Do you want someone to tell the secrets you dont want known to the world? We all have our skeletons in the closet, He wants us to clean those out by admitting they are there. He will give you strength when you need it, humble you when required, and never leave your side as promised. If wanting someone who will do those things for me is self-interest, yeah I guess you can say it is, but personally I just enjoy the company He gives me. :)

Everlasting life is an interesting by-product of developing a relationship with God.
Chiefly however, it should be out of gratitude ....dare I say 'love'?
He created a beautiful planet and made us to enjoy it.
True, things have taken a detour due to Adam's mistake, but God promises to set matters straight.
So he gives us life on a beautiful earth ....and when its lost, He gives us a second chance.
Doesn't that attract you to Him?
Doesn't that make you want to show gratitude and appreciation?
Doesn't that influence you to co-operate with Him?
That's worship.
