NO one in America has a problem with immigration. We have a problem with ILLEGAL immigration.

It's become a HUGE strain on our nation. ILLEGALS cost the US tens of billions of dollars each year in education, healthcare and incarceration expenses.

"Cheap Labor" is a myth by the pro-illegals. By the time you add the true costs of all ILLEGALS to their wages any cost savings is negated.

I believe in California, more illegals collect welfare benefits than pick fruit and vegtables.

There is no way someone who came to this country illegally should receive ANY benefits!!!

Illegal aliens are the problem... not legal immigrates.. If you live in California,Texas or in Arizona like I do .You feel the division more strongly. It gets to be a "them" against"us" attitude. While other states where the illegal alien is less visible,I don't think you feel the problem as much. The American people are overwhelmingly against illegal aliens. They are less decided and divided on the question of amnesty.. some feel they should be granted amnesty under certain guidelines, others say no way do they deserve amnesty. So this has divided our way of thinking, not our country. If anything would threaten this nation as a whole then most all Americans will be ailed with their own nation.
The people screaming the loudest are not illegal, they are legal people that have a vested interested in the fate of the illegal alien. And they are creating the problem and the back lash towards illegal aliens not the alien him/her self.
Its a legal issue ,the human ,humane factor doesn't have anything to do with it . Its a crime.

Its not so much immigration that divides. Its people's stance on illegal immigration that divides. Some (the stupid) don't see it as a problem. While those of us with brains and intelligence think it is a major problem. See I have no problem with immigration through legal channels as was done by the ancestors of nearly everyone in this country. I do on the other hand have a problem with border jumpers and those who have a total disregard for the laws of this country. That is the issue, not immigration in general, but illegal immigration to be exact. Thanks and have a nice day.

Now, I'm only 14, but I have seen numerous reasons why it divides America.

First of all its not immigration that divides us, but "illegal immigration" Some support the idea that illegal immigration is disrespectful to the law and should be punished, not to mention the rise in crime and job loss it has brought. Some think we should welcolme everyone to our borders and think its racist to disagree with them.

ILLEGAL immigration divides the US. Why? Because it has become polticized, made a racial (vs. legal issue) and nobody is doing anything meaningful about it.

The minute somebody says something about, you're labeled as a racist. People are pi**ed about the effects and influx of illegals, the crime they bring, the drain on public resources, the language barriers, etc. Those who are pro-illegals spin and justify as if we should all accept those who come here illegally.

btw- I'm an immigrant, a US citizen who has been here for decades. I came here legally with my parents and so have many family members and people I know.

Because we're a nation that's already divided by Democrats and Republicans, who have such different views on major issues. This nation is made up of many strong willed people and we use our right of free speech. Immigration is just one issue...we're also divided on the issues of gun control, birth control, abortions...the list can go on and on.

I don't understand the divide at all. I am an imigrant, but I did it legally. What seems to be the problem with others being exected to follow the rules?

If you buy a nice home with your hard earned money and make the notes, taxes and insurance payments; would you be offended and feel it wasn't fair if I stold the house next door and moved in for free, and the US gov let me keep it.

Would you be wrong for feeling I cheated the system, or would I be wrong for working the system?

It is not as divided as one would think. The Vocal minority who want to welcome, with open arms, the illegal immigrants into the country are simply so much louder than the Silent majority so it seems that we are more evenly divided. the problem with America today is that the Majority of us are allowing the minority to dictate what is acceptable. We are doing this by being silent and not putting our foot down! One liberal person cries and says that they are offended because of the word God in the pledge of allegiance and we keep our mouths shut and allow them to take it away. A few people think that we should open our borders to allow illegal immigrants in so they can live of our hard earned tax dollars and bring us down to the level of poverty that they are trying to get away from and we stay silent. Now the illegal immigrants are mad because we don't have everything available to them in spanish and so they protest. What do we do? Instead of rounding them up and sending them back, we start teaching school in two different languages and in some places we make it mandatory to learn spanish.
I think we should also make french mandatory because France wants to send some peple over here and Arabic too because we are going to start having more refugees coming over. What about the various Asian tongues too because we have a lot of Asian immigrants here as well. I think I am going to sue somebody because they are teaching my children about Wicca in school and making our children celebrate Mexican independance day. Why are we the only country that celebrates another country's independance day? Ok I will get off my soapbox now.

I think it divides America because people have different opinions on it and different methods on how it should be handled.Personally I think depending on where you do come from it depends on wether you are in favor or against illegal immigration. For example if you are a natural born citizen or obtained paperwork to enter the U.S then you more than like tend to be against illegal immigration. On the other hand if your parents entered illegally or you yourself are illegal then you tend to be more in favor of being in favor of illegal immigration. Also another major factor would be in what kind of social class you are.If you tend to be more lower middle class that barely makes it from paycheck to paycheck then you tend to be more against illegal immigration,if your upper class or higher middle class then you pretty much don't care or are profiting from illegal immigration.Unfortunately because of all those differences its tough to come up with a solution that everyone will agree completely on.

Immigration doesn't divide America....
ILLEGAL immigration divides us.

It divides us because for every one person who believes that illegals take our jobs from us, don't pay taxes, and use our social services and don't abide by standard laws(getting drivers licenses, getting auto insurance/ health insurance), there is another individual who loves illegal immigration because they know the illegals pay into our social security without the hope of ever receiving it at age 65, take on jobs that americans won't touch with a 10 foot pole, and work harder for less money.

Big business is for illegal immigration, and easily see the benefit of paying fines, because they are profiting so much more by the illegals working for them.

I personally wish all illegals would be sent back....I don't care about consequences, but I also see that they aren't really draining the economy. If it wasn't for them, social security would be kaput 5 years ago, and the government knows this.

It is not easy to argue for either side. They both have valid points.
