It was black,,,I just saw a thing about "old-time" candy on the discovery channel a few weeks ago.

Green, It is a plant. The red licorice usually has no licorice in it. The black is the original candy.

I would have to say Black, I'm 51 years old and until they started making red vines I never seen anything but black..Good question.
