I can't get the Japanese IME to work. It still types english words.?

Also can anyone translate the Japanese IME tool bar for me? I'm new to this language.

I am looking for this properties option in the tool bar and all I have in english is the word japanese and keyboard the next three items are in japanese and then there is a section that says ime and thats in japanese also. on the end is the minimize sign and next to that are buttons for caps and kana.

Hello ^^,

You most likely still have the input mode set to direct input or Alphanumeric. All you have to do to change to hiragana or katakana is click on the 'Input Mode' button in the tool bar and switch it to whatever you'd like.

There are also 2 ways to type in Japanese on an English language keyboard set-up.

The first one (which is not default, nor do I recommend it, especially for non-native typers of Japanese) is a system option in the toolbar that allows you to type using a Japanese keyboard style layout. Unless you are very familiar with using a Japanese keyboard, I wouldn't suggest you use it.

The second way is typing in romaji (various romaji systems are supported) and having it automatically convert to the writing system of your choice. For example, if you had it switched to hiragana and typed 'sakura' it would show up as 'さくら'. There is another demension to typing in Japanese that mainly has to do with Kanji conversions and I will get to that in a moment.

There may be times when you need to write a special type of kana (the small 'tsu', for example) and you may not know the proper keyboard shortcut for that. However there is a simple and easy way to look up the entire romaji shortcut list.

Here it is:

1. Click 'Properties' (in the toolbar).

2. From there, you should be in the 'General' category. From that screen, click 'Advanced'.

3. After clicking 'Advanced', another screen should come up and you should be at (or be able to click on the tab) 'Romaji-Kana conversion'. From there, you can see all of the romaji shortcuts.

Now... to Kanji typing...

This is quite simple. Just type in the word you want (in kana) and hit the space bar for a list of kanji options. Press enter when you've found your Kanji. Also, if you can't find the right Kanji, you may have to change your Kanji conversion list type.

On a side note... you will be pressing the enter button a lot, really ^^;;. It's just part of the system. Also, be careful that the computer doesn't automatically convert your text in an incorrect way ^^!

Also... I'm not sure what OS you have, but you'll probably have to go into your language options and make sure to enable the 'Extend support of advanced text services to all programs' option in the advanced section of 'language: text services and input languages' somewhere in your language menu. (It is in the same section where you would've added the Japanese language keyboard option if you had Windows XP. However, it is not in that exact spot. It is not hard to find tho).

Enabling that option is the only way I am actually able to type in Japanese (and Korean) in all programs.

Now... in terms of tool bar translation... everything should also have a corresponding english counterpart (if not totally in English), so long as your computer's actual operating language isn't set to Japanese there shouldn't be much of a need for translation ^^.

switch the imput from direct imput (you probably have it on the icon that looks like a capital "A") to "hiragana" (first on the list). Or Katakana.. whatever one you're trying to type in. =]

The IME does come with help in English... it should have installed itself in the start menu.
