My fiance and I are moving to Eugene in the next 3 mons (job transfer). Neither one of us have ever been there. We would like to live in a younger area, not the university. We are looking for bars, restaurants, shops, parks located near by. We do not want to be in a cookie cutter, plastic house. Or within an area like that...Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the South Hills is your area ... it's just south of the University area. Great parks, homes with lots of character. A bit more expensive though, but well worth it.

Another suggestion is the tiny town of Coburg, about 5 miles north of Eugene. It is quaint, historical, has a real sense of community, yet is only a ten minute drive from the two Eugene area Malls and about 15 minutes to the central downtown area.

I don't know if I would recommend any areas right downtown Eugene ... there are some neighborhoods downtown that are decent, even just what you seem to want, but it's one of those situations where you really need to see and look in person because it's a mixed bag. You might contact a realtor and tell them what you want. The area around the Public Library is kind of funky and cool ... right in downtown, older homes, not overly expensive, but you want to go look before you buy.

In general, stay east of Delta Highway ... from there north or south doesn't really matter. A few nice areas west of Delta Highway, but again ... it gets dicey, and the nicer areas are newer with the cookie cutter housing, so I wouldn't bother looking on west side at all, too much else to choose from on the east side (of Delta Highway).

Would be happy to help more if I can ... don't presently live in Eugene, but spent 25 years there and still have family living there.

I have to agree with Pichi.

Coburg is a very nice area. It's small and quaint and has a lot of history to it. It's fairly close to Eugene and many shopping areas. There is a fairly large mall area very near where there's a Costco and Petco.

However, you may want to consider Creswell as well.

It is about a 20 - 30 minute drive from Eugene. It is a seperate town that is a little more isolate and much more "down home" than Coburg.

The town is less avanced so you won't see the "cookie cutter" homes that you mentioned. It is actually a poor town and so most of the folks that live there are NOT plastic Barbie and Ken dolls and are very down to earth.

Another consideration is Springfield, specifically Thurston. This is an area that is growing fast and rich with culture.
It is only a 10 minute drive from downtown Eugene and the most beautiful part of Eugene/ Springfield.

The town is almost as spread out as Creswell, but there is much more to Springfield.
You have the Gateway Mall which is a collection of different stores with a HUGE food court that has a diverse selection of food.

Downtown Springfield feels homey as well with it's diversity of different cultures in one area.

The public library, which is off Main Street, is a great place to hang out. The local court house is in the same building.

I hope you enjoy your move and new home town. I fell in love with the culture there from day one and miss it more than anything.

Hey, how about ya pack me in your bag, I'm small enough and I don't eat alot, I'll take scraps!! LOL!!
