Military prisons tend to be much more strict than civilian prisons. The prisoners are expected to work, their personal areas and effects have to be positioned exactly per a diagram, and the guards have a zero tolerance policy for any kind of misbehavior.
When I was at Fort Lewis I would periodically serve as the 'Duty Officer' and one of my duties was to personally count every prisoner in the military prison on post. During one of my counts a prisoner who was asleep cursed at being woken up for the count - he was immediately placed in solitary for 4 days.

Generally, a military prison (compared to normal military life) is no worse than a civilian prison.
There are execptions, and some governments are different, but generally a member of the miltiary sent to a military prison is under comparable restrictions as someone in a civilian prison.

A normal brig that soldiers end up in? It's not worse really. Harsher penalties involved in military law typically, but the brig itself isn't worse.
Now if we're takin Gitmo, then you have to imagine being held indefinitely, with or without proof, and not having near the amount of rights your typical prisoner has. You can rot in Gitmo w/o ever taking to a lawyer.

I had a soldier that ended up in our post stockade. It was different from what I've seen of civilian jails. Life was very regulated, and there was little to no opportunity for any of what you would expect (fights, rapes, violence of any sort). The guards were attentive to any kind of rule breaking. The life of discipline led previously by the soldiers there probably helped, as well as the fact that many of them would return to their former units, albeit with less rank than they previously held.
This was just a post stockade though. Maybe 20 to 30 prisoners total. I've heard that in the larger lockups (Ft. Knox and Ft. Leavenworth), it's more like a civvie jail.
One thing about the stockades, they don't let the prisoners loll about watching tv and working out. They get up early, do PT, then do manual labor all day long.
My .02.
God Bless.

I hear that FT Leavenworth (US Disciplinary Barracks) is Better than Federal prison.
The Soldier Guards maintain a safer environment than the larger Federal prisons do.
If anyone there gets violent or does not obey the rules they send them to Federal prison as a punishment (they are all afraid of being raped in the civilian prisons)

When I was in the Navy the base stockade was run by the Marines. It was not a place a Navy man wanted to end up. I used to see these guys running around carrying rocks etc. In the ship's jail they would find a dirty metal trash can give you a wire brush and some metal polish and make you polish it inside and out all the while yelling and screaming at you. The stock aide was for the real troublemakers, I guess that was you last chance to either shape up or get kicked out on a dishonorable discharge.

I don't think military prison is worse than civillian prison. The order, discipline and respect for one another is going to be more apparent in a military prison. In a civillia prison it's everyman for himself and gaurd too.
