There are many different ways to fast.
Like you said, a 24 hr period is one way.
Also skipping 1 meal is another.
Also you can neither eat or drink for up to 3 days (use this only in an extreme need).
But you can also fast by only drinking and not eating (some people drink water, others a juice).
The most important thing is to use this time to get closer to God.

There is no hard and fast rule on how long to fast. It is a personal decision. Was your pastor's instruction "general" to the whole congregation or specific to you? There may be health reasons why he would not want EVERYONE going 24 hours. Or why he may not want you going 24 hours.
Do what your conscience and faith says is right. If you have a question about your pastor's instructions, ask him. He may be able to clarify it for you.

The laws of fasting applies on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It means that we eat 2 small meals and one regular size meal and nothing in between. We usually fast when we are awake.

48 hours as a minimum to clean out your system. You can increase to up to a week after that.
I almost did 40 days, although I drank grape juice during the fast. Jesus reportedly did 40 days, so it is not unusual.

You should pray about fasting...the Holy Spirit will guide you as to the length of time. Ask for God's will in the matter.

I Think 12 hours is good! In Islam during Ramadan, fasting is done only during the Day Light hours, when the sun goes down, you can eat and drink all you please..!

fasting is kind of an up to you sort of thing. Pray and and you will get an answer. Standard is 24hrs, (of course eight of it we are asleep), but it really is between you and your deity.
