the hour is separated in two 4 parts quaters. one quater is 15 minutes. the other way it is divied most often is in half 30 minutes before the top of the hour means 30 min. till 1:00
half past means 30 min. after the hour of 1:30
then we go on to divide an hour into minutes and seconds we dont go more then that unless it some race or something

It means fifteen minutes until the next hour. 15 is 1/4 of 60. 60 minutes are in an hour. 15+15+15+15=60 We call 1/4, one quarter. 4 quarters = $1.00

A quarter or 1/4 of an hour is 15 minutes. I guess that's where the phrase came from. Good question.

"15 minutes of...", "15 minutes before... ", or "quarter of... " the hour.
The hour consists of 60 minutes. Each hour, divided into quarters, would be 15 minutes, therefore...
See?
Half past is a half hour or 30 minutes.
Believe it or not, but a friend finally made *that* sink into *my* head when *I* was in the 8th grade.

Quarter til'the hour means " 15 minutes BEFORE the hour or 45 minutes AFTER the hour". Quarter "AFTER means 15 minutes AFTER the hour"
After or Before means any hour when the "big" hand is at "12".
