Depends on the workplace. If the situation is MS, then anything java would be 2nd rate. If the situation is Linux, then anthing VB would 2nd rate.

Preference? Linux. Rock solid, no need to pirate, virus free, upgrade patches without a reboot. In other words the opposite of Win.

Depends. If you're into programming, then Linux. If cost matter, probably Linux. If all you do is web surfing and light word processing, Linux. If you're into gaming, Windows. If you're into graphics, go Mac.

your choice. its your computer and if u feel comfy with both then it really doesn't matter. I use windows at work but at home, i have both my desktop and laptop linux. lucky for me i can remote in to work computer and work that way so i dont need any native windows programs to do 'homework'

Linux is always free, and you can get it any time, but it requires some skills.
