That's wright, it derives from Latin Paulus or Paullus that it's a diminutive form of 'Paucus' or 'Parvulus', meaning a small person or a kid.
In Italy the male is 'Paolo' with a diminutive form 'Paolino', and the female is 'Paola' with a diminutive form 'Paolina' or 'Paoletta'.
