Have a "Shield" custom made for him.
This would symbolize God protecting him and his call to defend God. You could find a family crest and put this on the shield with a big Cross. Also, you could put his "Saint" confirmation name on the Shield. He could then hang it on his door, or in his room. The Shield could be wood or metal depending on your amount you want to spend.

Things Remembered has some really nice silver picture frames. Some have crosses and other religious engravings. In the spirit of spreading compassion and love, you could make a donation to a charity in your godson's name.

This may be unconventional, but I still remember my grandparents giving me a tree (it was a white pine) when I "graduated" from kindergarten. Years later, after my family moved away, I would stop to see the tree when I was on the way home from college. Any time I'm passing through our old town, I still stop to see how tall its grown.

i like the idea of something religious engraved with his name and the date of his first communion. also, you can add to that a donation to a charity, a savings bond, etc...you have more leeway as far as how much you're willing to spend.
