They don't hurt as they are put on. But you have to remember, they are pulling on your teeth in order to straighten them, so within a few days to a week after you initially get them on, as that process begins, usually your mouth will begin to ache & it may hurt to chew. But then, the soreness will go away. As you go back each month to have them adjusted or 'tightened', the soreness will come back again for a few days. Sometimes it's worse than others, but usually it's nothing that a few ibuprofen can't handle.

Braces never hurt for me during the appointments. As the poster above me said, it was a few hours after the appointment and then maybe a bit sensitive for a day or two.
What I did was plan to have a nice decent meal very soon after my appointment -- I always got taken out for lunch! Then I'd keep some soft foods around the house in case my teeth were sensitive -- jello, scrambled eggs, soups, oatmeal, that sort of thing. After a day, maybe two, I was back to normal. Ibuprophen can help if you're a bit sore.

I just had braces on Tuesday! I was really scared, but there really is nothing to be scared of! and i am afraid of dentists!!
when they put them on it dosent hurt at all, everyone says the glue tastes horriable but its really not that bad its a little bit like lemon juice! But u cant taste it for long! afterwards your lips are a bit swollen but they don't ache for a couple hours after, first they are sore and ache and its really hard to eat but if you have parecetemol (excuse spelling) its fine have lots of ice cream and mashed potatoes and use the mint flavoured wax they give you, especially on the back brackets as it can make the inside of your cheeks sore but the acheness only lasts a couple of days im fine now and people say u cant eat this and you cant eat that but reall just avoid tofee and chewing gum and the only thing that really needs to be cut down on fizzy drinks but chocolate is alrite just make sure u brush your teeth and use mouthwash (they normally give you some) and dont worry about it, it only makes things worse! and what is really and hour only seems like ten minutes so just relax and take deep breaths through ur nose and your be fine and it will be over b4 u know it!
Its all worth it really two years of it and then straight teeth for the rest of your life!!

I just got braces on the top about 6 weeks ago and waiting to get the bottom ones.
The first few days after getting them on and after each adjustment your teeth and gums will be sore because they are moving. I can't bite down into anything during that time, just eat soft foods, or cut up in bites small enough to swallow.
Then it goes away and until you get them adjusted again you can eat just about anything.
But nothing really hard because you can break a bracket off your teeth. That would just be a hassle.

They can, but it is all good. They are put into your mouth to move your teeth, it will feel like you have a headache sometimes, and you may get a little irritable. Talk to your ortho about it, they are very knowledgeable and will give you suggestions to ease the discomfort.

Yes, I had them and them hurt for a few days when they put a new wire on, but all the pain is worth it. You will thank yourself later and be happy you got them.
