This probably sounds a bit dumb for me to be asking, but I'm curious as to what is the difference between haveing an unofficial girlfriend, and an official girlfriend (or boyfriend for that matter, but I'm a guy and will only have girlfriends).

well it all depends on where you and this person feel. Like if the girl wants to be Friends with Benefits thenm she would obviously be an unofficial girlfriend but I think an official girlfriend would be when you hang out all the time you have met her family and them like you and she has met your family and they like her. and you guys kiss and do "couple" things that official

I take 'official' to mean that both gf & bf have communicated their clear desire to be with each other, and are not seeing anyone else. There's clear communication - no gray area.
And to be frank, I had never heard the term "unofficial bf/gf"
:-). But I read some of the other answers and it makes sense.
It might be that you are kinda with somebody but nothing is sure yet. There are gray areas.

An official girlfriend means, that you do not cheat and unofficial girlfriend means that you play the field and have your options open and that she'll do for now.

Unofficial usually means that they are still getting to know each other and haven't decided on a commitment. Official means they are in a commitment and all their friends and family know they are together.

Okay. Here is the scoop. Having an official bf/gf is catigorized as this:
They will tell others they are your gf/bf.
Call you and go out frequentely. If you arent sure with a person ask them officially.

Official is exclusive and everyone knows what is gong on. No gray area.
Unofficial is all murky, may or may not be elclusive.

i always thought that official means that you are exclusive and that you are only seeing that person and no one else and when you are unofficial then you are able to still see other people and keep your options open

if a girl hears u call her yo gf and she likes u shell probably be more clingy and stuff. if a guy hear a girl call him her bf hell probably be a lil distant til he knows what he feels is real.
in terms of un and official its up to u. and yo deep ideas on the actual term bf gf
(i kno fo' sho kissing a girl-even on the cheek-and not telling yo girl is a definite no no)
