God appeared as a stranger in the night and fought ..I guess God struggled hand to hand with Jacob, the second son of Isaac...Then after seeing that He cannot defeat Jacov , God gave Jacob a new name ...Israel..
Why did God struggled with Jacob?I guess God took a force coresponding to a human being..otherwise He could defeat Jacov with a finger..

I guess it was God The Father.
Jesus has shown up rarely in Old Testament..e.g to Daniel

In my Ortodox Bible results it was God The Father, and not Jesus, not an angel.

So, when Jacob takes his family and goes back to his parents's land , he sees the encampment of God and the angels welcome him...

He planned to make peace with his brother Isav...On his way to Isav..a Man (God)struggled with Jacob and couldn't defeat him..When morning was about to come the Man(God) said :Let me go!...And Jacob said he won't let Him go unless He blesses him..Jacob asked the Man about His name , and the Man said :''Why do you ask My name ?He is wonderfull!''And blessed Jacob and gave him the name Israel instead of Jacob..saying ''You fought God and people and you will be hard(?)''And Jacob named that place ''The sight of God ''(Seeing God )saying ''I saw God face to face and my soul is saved !''
So it wasn't an angel..it was God..or I didn't study quite well languages and literature at the University in my country (Europe ). Actually I didn't study theology , but the Bible speaks for itself..

God didn't lose the fight, Jacob gave up after 3 days. It was symbolic to show Jacob that no matter what he does God was in control and he would always be stronger.

It wasn't a fight, it was a wrestling match. Jacob prided himself at being strong, so God beat him at his own game. Right after winning, God was going to leave, but Jacob wouldn't let go and begged for Him to stay. God gave Jacob a new name as a reward for hanging on even when he lost. God did not struggle with Jacob, it was Jacob who struggled with God. :)

Why do you say it was God when the Bible says it was an angel?
Yes, the angel could have knocked him out in a flash.
However, it was an occasion for Jacob to show his determination, his seriousness and sincerity.
Genesis 32:26 explains what Jacob was so intent about:
"I am not going to let you go until you first bless me.. . ."
He got what he wanted and the angel (and God, who was watching) had manifested proof of Jacob's devotion.
