If the esophagus has become damaged enough by acide backsplash, the opening to the stomach doesn't open and close properly. In that case two things can happen (and they both happened to me): 1. When a person is lying flat or sleeping, stomach contents can back up into the espophagus. If the fluids get far enough, the person can start to choke when the stuff gets into the windpipe. A sleeping person would awaken choking on harsh stomach fluids that burn at least as bad as a heartburn. If the amount of fluid is a lot, the person will "vomit". I put "vomit" in quotes because there's no retching at all - the stomach contents just flow out because the opening to the esophagus doesn't close correctly. 2. If the opening to the stomach is continuously irritated and damaged this way, it can become inflamed and swell shut. Then the person will have a lot of trouble swallowing things. This was easily fixed in my case by a surgeon using some kind of dilating tool. I was put out for the operation, didn't feel a thing. There were no incisions since he went in through the mouth. I should add that prescription and over-the-counter acid blockers such as Prilosec and Prevacid have completely controlled the situation. I never get heartburn or "night choking" any more, but I have to make sure I take that med every day! BTW Prevacid is pretty expensive but Prilosec is now sold over the counter and can be bought on sale for about $30.00 for a month's supply. All things considered when it comes to medication these days, that's not such a bad deal. Good luck, Big Al Mintaka

Acid reflux is a serious condition that affects the stomach area. When you eat certain foods or drink some strong drinks like coffee, you may feel a burning sensation working its way up from your abdomen to your chest and into your throat. Some people even have a sour taste in their mouth. Basically acid reflux is when too much acid is formed in the body and it moves up the esophagus.

Many people take antacids which do work in most cases but sometimes the condition is much worse, you may experience it over a long period of time. In this case you might need to see your doctor who can give you special acid reflux tablets. These are much stronger than antacids and will improve your acid reflux almost immediately. Sometimes in very severe cases it may be necessary to have surgery. The acid reflux can also be treated with natural, herbal remedies, which you can find at your local health store.

Many people prefer to use alternative therapy because it does not cause any other side effects and in some cases it’s even more effective than the prescribed medication. The body’s natural balance is out of order so you should treat it naturally. Acid reflux is also known as heart burn, acid indigestion and is directly related to foods we eat. This is why keeping it natural is also very important. Most of the acid reflux forming foods is processed food like burgers, fatty chips, and other well known fast foods.

If you do suffer from acid reflux it will be a good idea to stop the problem at the source, instead of just taking tablets. You can start by making a list of all the foods and drinks you consume. Then you can find out which ones give you mild acid reflux, which ones are more serious and which foods don’t at all. In this way you can now cut out all the foods from your diet which give you pain.

You may be able to eat these foods again at some other stage in your life but until your body has reached a balanced state, it will be very difficult to do so without getting acid reflux. This disease is very prevalent in our communities nowadays and it can hinder people from different things in their life. Find out more about acid reflux and how you can control it, cure it or prevent it!

For proper digestion, the stomach produces some enzymes and chemicals. Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) is the main chemical that mixes with food along with other digestive juices. The inner most smooth layer of the stomach (gastric mucosa) is a delicate layer and too much HCL secretion caues irritation of the gstric mucosa. This causes the stomach to regurgitate (some of the gastric contents tend to come upwards to the oesophagus or food pipe causing it to irritate too. This irritation of the stomach and oesophagus is called the Acid reflux. Symptoms are, - burning stomach and oesophagus, loss of appetite, pain on the upper abdomen (epigastrium), reffered pain on the chest and back-bone.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up, or refluxes) into the esophagus. The liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus although this occurs in a minority of patients. The regurgitated liquid usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach.
