It's one of the Gifts from the Holy Spirit. It lets you know when you are being told what is wrong and you usually get goosebumps of the supernatural kind. It is the ability to separate the BS from the truth. @8-)

Discernment is the faculty of discerning; discrimination; acuteness of judgment and understanding. Also, the act or an instance of discerning. Hebrews 5:14 says “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Acts 5 shows the power of discernment. Using discernment Peter was able to tell that Ananias and Sapphira were lying. They were smote, died, dead, gone within three hours of each other. Using discernment we can make Godly decisions and find out the truth in issues.

Discernment is a gift. A discerning person has the ability to see the truth, to know the Godly from the evil. It is important because satan uses tricks and tries to appear to us as a false god or prophet. Satan can be quiet convincing to a person who does not know the Father and/or does not have the Holy Spirit in them. Having the gift of discernment allows you to KNOW what is and what is not of God.

It is a gift not everyone has unfortunately.Unless one is grounded in God's Word and faithful ,they may be saved but do not have the ability to see what is and is not sound doctrine. The importance is that without discernment one backslides and can unknowingly lead others astray.Lack of discernment is the paramount reason we have so many denominations and sects. There are none in Scripture.

Discernment is the faculty of mind..of judging, of understanding what is right and what is wrong..what is good what is evil..
Discernment is acctualy our reason..
Human beings own discernment from God..
Some could reject some reasons of God and they shall make mistakes..and won't understand quite everything..and it looks as they don't have discernment in some situations..
Only hen , etc..don't have discernment...or people with troubles from satan...or people who have been punished and whose mind have been taken by God because they sinned ..too much..

4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest you also be like him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
Proverbs 26:4-5
Discernment is knowing when to apply verse 4 and when to apply verse 5.
What people commonly refer to as contradictions in the Bible are specifications. It takes discernment to know which example applies to your situation.
The importance is that if you misunderstand how to apply a Biblical principle, you will end up hurting yourself or others.
We are supposed to go to our brother and tell him his fault according to Matthew 18:15. And yet in Matthew 7, Jesus says not to pick the splinter out of my brother's eye if I have a beam in my own.
So, do I go to my brother or not?
It depends.
If I honestly have a problem with him, I need to go to him. If I have the problem, and I want to divert attention from my own sin and choose to do so by directing attention to my brother's lesser sin - I am at fault.

It is a gift of the Spirit... and the Holy Spirit can guide you in decision making or 'seeing truth' in something, even when satan is trying to deceive you or wisdom in an area that is beyond normal... it is the way that God guides you thru your life thru the Holy Spirit. Not everyone has this gift tho.... and cannot use it or understand it unless they have that gift. Some churches say that you have "this and this and this' gift if you are truly Christian... but that is bogus, as the bible says some will have 1 gift, some will have more than one... but no one will have all gifts

Discerment is a gift of the Spirit, it is the ability to apply reason to spiritual matters. The thing about common sense is that it isn't very common. This is why allowing the Spirit of God to guide you in making discisions is so vital.
