Be paranoid. Keep your kids around as much as you can. Only let them in neighborhoods you know. Only let them go over to homes where you know people. Sometimes that isn't enough... and that is sad.
You can also lobby your state representative for harsher punishments for convicted sex offenders. Virginia, where I live, has an online registry of sex offender work and home addresses and is considering passing a bill that would require all convicted sex offenders to have a special license plate (that is reflective blue, I think).
Google your state and see what is happening there, then push for what you feel is appropriate.

I just don't even know what to say about this. I get so sick to my stomach thinking what this little boy went through, what any child that is sexually abused and then murdered goes through. It's horrible and sad. I saw a video feed and it said that the family and neighbors knew that a convicted sex offender lived in the trailer park. I hope it's not true that the family knew about the sex offender living right there, because I can't imagine they would know that and still let their child be outside alone. It's really difficult because kids need to be outside, and I'm sad that the days are gone when kids, even older kids could go outside and safely play. Even teenagers are getting abducted, so when can we ever let our kids have that little bit of freedom and independence? All we can do is be paranoid, super vigilant, and keep an eye on those sex offender lists to see if any live in your area. Although I hear those lists aren't always updated and the sex offenders tend to register in one area then prowl around other areas. Good Luck to you and all with your children, and lets watch out for each others kids! Today after school there was a little girl whose parents hadn't showed up to pick her up yet. My friend and I took our kids over and waited with this kid until her Dad drove up, we didn't want her to be alone there, even though we are on a military post, you just never know. And if for some reason I was late picking up my daughter, I would hope someone would be kind enough to make sure she was okay and not alone until I got there.

Some people are depraved, that is certain. You should worry when it comes to supervision. We live in a nice neighborhood in a small town -- all of the homes are less than four years old. There are about 20 kids, mostly little girls, and we had a child molestor move into the cul-de-sac. I say this to tell you and everyone else to be aware of who is around you. Put your state's bureau of investigation website on your "favorites" so that you can know who's living next to you. Even if you're lucky enough to not have any convicted predators living close by, there are still many who haven't been caught!

I think that some parents give their children to much responsibility. Some that live in little neighborhoods think that it could never happen there and feel a sense of false-safety. Therefore, letting the kids run around outside alone.. I live far in the country and near all of my family and if i have my kids outside (they're 2 & 3) i can 't take my eyes off of them.. I worry about them hurting themselves so much that i could never take the chance of someone else hurting them.

Being a child molester is a sickness, with no cure, unfortunately. It is sad that the parents let the little boy outside by himself to play. These days children seem susceptible to every dangerous criminal out there. Parents really need to keep a close eye on their children at all times.

I totally agree with you that it is horrible. But I am guilty of letting my children play outside alone. Sometimes you have to go potty or something. Please don't blame the parents. They did what was right for them. I hope those people get the chair! I think as parents these things make us realize our own downfalls and perhaps they are a learning experience for some to be better parents. I know my children will always have me there or they wont be outside anymore. I learned. I thank that family for teaching me before I had to learn their way.

What was the 6 year old doing outside alone?? I am so paranoid about this stuff. I won't take my daughter to a daycare that doesn't have cameras in all of the classrooms.
They are hard to find and a little pricey, but what is the cost of therapy for a little baby girl nowadays??

You are so right in thinking in this manner,if if people would only stop and think the next time they are ready to let their children out to play, should I or shouldnt I let them go out alone? then thats where common sense comes in,they should then ( if they are in doubt) tell their children not to go out and let them do something constructive inside. Read to them, then let them read to you theyll love to have the chance to play teacher with their mommy as the student. rubbrstampr
