when i sing my tone is horrible. I know to sing from my diaphragm. I heard that I have to learn to relax my larynx muscle, but if its true how do I do that?

I guess I need to know why you feel your tone is horrible? Do you strain when you sing? Is your vibrato off? Do you not sing through a line? I guess I need a little more information. If you don't have a voice teacher already you should get one and have them listen to you. If you are singing with proper support as you've suggested then your larynx shouldn't be an issue. Make sure your jaw is relaxed. We hold a lot of tension in a jaws, more than we realize. One exercise to try would be just singing easily on a vowel using a 5 note scale. You wiggle your jaw back and forth while doing this to sing independent of it. Make sure you aren't just stepping up to notes but smearing the sound around like peanut butter on a bagel. I could give you more specific advice if you like.....you can email me through my profile. Best to you.

While I don't know if this is something that someone else has told you or if this is your own reaction to your voice, let me just say that the tone we hear in our heads is not the tone other people hear. When we sing, the acoustics of the sound reverberate in our heads and is hindered by that, while the sound that comes out of our mouths is not. If you're taking instruction from a teacher, they should be looking for your natural sound or voice. That means, your instrument in it's most natural and inhibited form.

Many things can get in the way. Like vocal tension and incorrect placement, that sort of thing. My advice is to work with an instructor and ask that your lessons be taped so that you may review them to get a better understanding of your instrument.

Hope this helps - by the way, I'm a vocal instructor.

Practice and instruction will give you a better sound. Look at Rod Stewart. When he first came out I could not stand his voice and with a lot of practice and coaching he sounds good now.
