I just bought a pair of Finches but don't want them to breed. Is a nest necessary or does it just encourage them to mate.

no, i read online they do not need the nest, it is only to breed, but sometimes they have minds of their own, my finches kept building nests in the food dish. So, I had no choice but to let them have a nest and breed. But birds sleep on perches mostly, nests are only for breeding

Nests are only for breeding. You are doing right by not allowing one.

If your hen starts to lay eggs, then you can lower the ammount of light she is getting by covering the cage. Start with 12 hours of light and lower it if she continues laying.

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions. I have raised and bred Gouldian Finches and Cockatiels.
