My baby Shih tzu is 9 weeks old and he weighs 1.8 pounds (as of 4 or 5 days ago). His mommy weighs 7 pounds and his daddy weighs 10 pounds. How do I know the size my baby will get? Do males ushually grow bigger than females? Do the parents always determine the ultimate size of the offspring? Can the baby sometimes be smaller than the smallest parent? Does neutering effect the size?

Neutering doesn't effect the size but will make a calmer dog with a less of a rick of certain cancers. Just like in humans you can get a rough idea of offspring size in dogs by the size of the parents. Sometimes they can be smaller or larger then both parents but are usualyl somewhere inbetween.

Good luck

Neutering doesn't have anything to do with the sizes. A Shih Tzu should weigh between 9 - 16 pounds. So I would say yours will stay small since both parents were small. It is really hard to tell you just what size your dog will be. You can judge from the parents of the dog. I had a pup that never weigh over 5 pounds out of the same litter her sister ended up weighing 15 pounds. I just had a call from one my puppies owner telling me her weighs 28 pounds lol..I have eight and they range from 10 to 20 pounds. So it varies. You never know. I have a puppy right now who is 6 weeks old and weighs 2.02 pounds.

It's been my experience that parents do not necessarily determine the size of their offspring. You cannot measure somewhere in between mommy & daddy's size and expect to come up with an accurate size for what your puppy will be... if you do, you'll end up dissapointed probably about 90% of the time. Also, I've found that neutering very well MAY effect his/her size, but his/her outward size (it may make him overweight), but that out weighs the risk of him/her breeding with a neighbor's fancy dog & you getting sued for it. :-) In other words, despite vanity, I think neutering is a good idea.

no neutering doesnt affect the size.
yes males grow bigger
the size the pup will get depends mostly
on genetics
no the parents dont determine the size
the average size of a shih tzu can be found on www.akc.org

ok you have a lot of questions. yes males usually grow a little bit bigger than females. no the parents do not always determine the sixe of your dog, although they do have and effect on the offspring. we were just learningabout this in science. if you now the genes of the dogs parents history than you can do punnett square. think about your dog as a human. does a human always grow to be as big as their parent? no they can be smaller or bigger. and no neutering does not effect the sixe of your dog. it just has an effect on the reproductive organs in your dog.
