This was sufficient rain to cover the highest mountains. Mount Everest is 8,848 meters tall. How much rain would have to fall per hour to cover it 40 days and 40 nights?

easy enough to explain arrarat, it's a volcano rising from a flat plain so that elevation was created by earth moving upwards, not floodwater submerging the mount.

The creationist theory on it is that the mountains were pushed up after/during the flood.

But let's see - 40 days/nights = 960 hours.. You would need about 9 meters per hour, worldwide.

Boy, there are a lot of skeptics answering this question in here. I hope this answer will clarify things.

The waters that flooded the whole earth didn't only come from the rain; you'll notice that Genesis also says that the waters burst from the ground, leading scholars to believe that the earth was watered not with rain before the Flood, but by underground springs worldwide, which must have been tremendous, considering the worldwide tropical environment attested to by the fossil record. The combination of the underground reservoirs and the (probable) vapor canopy (the waters above the earth, mentioned in Genesis) condensing flooded the world.

As for Everest being covered with water - Everest didn't exist at the time of the Flood. In fact, none of the "high" mountains existed then. You'll notice that Psalms 104:8 says, speaking of the Flood of Noah, "the mountains rose, the valleys sank....." A work of God, naturally, in order for the tremendous amount of water to find a home. The "valleys" sank in some places to over six miles, and the mountains rose to almost the same height in places (Everest, K-2).

And it was truly a worldwide Flood. Why would Noah and his family spent almost a hundred years building a huge ship when they could have simply walked a few days to avoid a local flood? Why would he have brought two of every kind of bird on board when they could have simply flown to safety elsewhere if it was local? After the Flood, when God showed Noah the rainbow, did He say, "Here is my rainbow - it is my symbol to you that I will never again send on the world *a local flood*?" Of course not. We've had thousands of local floods since then. The language of Genesis is very clear. Only skeptics or those who want to ignore the teachings of Jesus and the Bible dismiss Genesis as historical.

Did you happen to watch the "True" Noah's story on the Discovery channel? If you watched that you must have a lot of questions.

The pretty much discount everything the Bible teaches and tell us what to think as true seekers of knowledge. But, what they forget is that God can do as he sees fit and whether it is the whole world or just the known part. Whether it was all the animals or the local ones. We must take such things by faith.

Personally, I believe God flooded the world and the waters came from above and below and indeed covered the world in such a short time. The animals were taken as said and the Ark which even made of wood and of such a size they all fit.

What I find funny is after watching "The Day After Tomorrow" and read the book they seem to believe the world can enter a new ice age at the drop of a hat and that I believe was in less time. So Science and the "Educated" will say and do as they like and I will just keep on trusting in God and not worry about their ideas.

What is the significance of 40 days and 40 nights?

Actually, I admire your question, but you left out part of the answer. When God made the earth He had a division of firmament with water above divided by water below. It appears that He let loose the upper firmament and let the waters flow down into the nether world, and damned it up.

Hence, we have the damned. So it wasn't just rain. It appears that the relationship in the heavens changed as well, since after the flood there were rainbows, as opposed to before this there were not. All of this was caused by multipling wickedness so that the earth became so terrible of a place, God had to destroy all of the inhabitants except for Noah and his family.

I admire your question because it is a good use of reasoning.

You have to remember that the flood would have changed the earth's topography. Land would have sunk making mountains, by force, taller.

In addition to that the flood was no mere rain of long duration. Before the flood it had never rained. It's one of the reasons the people laughed at Noah and his family. The earth was covered with a cloud canopy. When the skies "opened" at that time it would have become catastrophic.

well- the biblical areas didn't really extend to Everest, so let's give them a break there. Plus, there's not much human life living over about 4,000 meters.

So- I guess it rained ~100 meters per day.

Let me extend this....

40 days = 960 hours
8,848 meters = 29,021 feet = 348,252 inches

30.2 feet of rain per hour
362.7 inches of rain per hour
6 inches of rain per minute
0.10 inch of rain per second

That's literally a waterfall.

Actually, if you read the entire account, it rained for 40 days and nights, the windows of heaven opened and poured out it's water (the firmament) and the underground water came forth. It wasn't only rain.
