I read that is has something to do with Buckminster fuller hence the bucky ball but what the heck is it for?

It is a molecule of 60 carbon atoms arranged into the shape of a regular sphere.

Carbon takes many forms, the most popular of which are coal, graphite, and diamond. Buckminster Fuller was famous for the design of geodesic domes. And buckminsterfullerenes are another name for the 60 atom carbon molecule also known as the Bucky Ball.

Well, Bucky fuller invented the geodesic dome and a Bucky ball is a carbon molecule with a similar structure.
