It can, thats why hypnotist sometimes use open flames like candles to help induce a relaxed hypnotic state. Its also popular with people who practice self hypnosis. I would think after a day of hiking, rock climbing, etc. the fatigue would augment the relaxation.

I can't say that a campfire has ever put me in a 'trance', but it has certainly soothed me. I am compelled to watch it, and I feel quite relaxed.

I would say it relaxes you, i dont know about a trance. I guess its all in the mind of the person staring.
