I was just wondering. I did drink a lot of soda but have cut back a lot. My husband told me that Pepsi/soda is bad for your bones. Is this true? Or is he totally b.s.ing me??? Thanks in advance for the responses.

*just to share...my hubby likes to throw me off all the time...he says I am a easy target. So I thought I would ask and see if anyone else has heard of this...thanks again :)

Your husband is completely right. While high fructose corn syrup in regular soda may lead to diabetes and associated problems, the phosphoric acid is what causes direct bone problems. The phosphate cna react with calcium to form calcium phosphate. This makes the concentration of free calcium lower in your blood. Low blood calcium levels signals your body to break down bone to get calcium out.

Therefore, lots of phosphate from soda leads to bone loss.

Did you ever do that science project where you would put a chicken bone in soda? After a few days the bone disolved and was rubbery. This scary visual is brought to you by acid.

On the other hand this does not happen to your internal bones when drinking soda. The acid in your stomach is so strong it could burn holes in carpet and is contained in your digestion process.

You are not out of the clear as soda does effect teeth mostly because of the high sugar levels. The scare tactic isn't true but it is maybe your husband's way of passive agressively helping your health.

Yes it is, The phosphate that is in sodas, causes you to loose calcium. The high fructose corn syrup is a chemically engineered sweetener that the body has a particular problem utilizing and can cause insulin resistance. Funny the US is the only country that uses high fructose corn syrup. Other countries still use real sugar. While lot of sugar is not good for you it is not near as bad as high fructose corn syrup. Nobody seemed to care when they changed it.

I have not heard about soda being bad for you bones, but it is certainly very bad for your teeth. Did you know if you left a tooth in a glass of coca-cola, it will completely dissolve overnight?
