as per the "experts": On one hand, sweating profusely at night — what doctors call "night sweats" — can be a worrisome sign of undiagnosed but serious illness. On the other hand, several studies suggest that night sweats are an incredibly common symptom, and that in the majority of people an extensive series of tests will fail to uncover a specific cause.
During their medical training, doctors are taught that night sweats are often a sign of a serious medical condition, with Hodgkin's disease and tuberculosis at the top of the list. In fact, night sweats are common in these conditions, affecting about half of people with tuberculosis and about a quarter of those with Hodgkin's disease and other types of lymphoma. Night sweats are particularly worrisome when they are accompanied by certain other symptoms, such as fevers, shaking chills, weight loss, pain, itching and fatigue.
